New Orleans near downtown
 

I'm wanting to make hotel reservations in New Orleans for early April. Can anyone tell me whether the 300 block of St. Peters St and the 300 block of Julia St are in relatively safe areas or not?

I'm not sure of the safety of this immediate area, though it seems isolated from most attractions and restaurants you'd likely want to patronize as well as decent public transportation. It's reasonable to inquire, as NOLA has plenty of sudden changes of neighborhood quality.

Myself, I'd want to be on good public transportation at the very least or better yet in a good part of the French Quarter. I don't think either qualifies in the area you're considering.

I don't know anything about that area, but personally I wouldn't stay in the French Quarter either -- we loved staying in the warehouse district.

For safety, especially if you're not familiar with New Orleans, I'd stay in the French Quarter. It's one of the most heavily policed areas in the country.

I've looked at a map and on Google Maps, and it seems that St Peter Street edges Jackson Square, which would be a good location. There are also North and South Peters Streets that are closer to the warehouse district. As nearly as I can tell, Julia Street is also in the warehouse district.

If you could provide the exact addresses, we could probably give you more exact advice.

I just googled, too. Not sure about the St. Peters St. address, but Julia is in a great neighborhood -- within blocks of the hotel we stayed at (Renaissance Arts), Emeril's and Cochon, the WWII museum and the Embassy Suites. A bunch of art galleries are on Julia. Much quieter than the French Quarter, but walking distance. We really liked the neighborhood.

That is a great location. St. Peters St. is about as central to everything that you could possibly be and Julia Street has art galleries and is close to Emeril's flagship restaurant.

Both areas are very safe.

Thanks all - The walking part doesn't bother me - I have to walk vigorously at least an hour a day anyway. I was more concerned with safety issues and you have reassured me so I'm off to make the reservations.

We stayed recently in the Garden District. I liked it there, but next time I will stay closer to the French Quarter--probably at Drury Inn Suites, 535 Gravier Street.

It is a safe area & a trolley line runs right through there I believe. However, unless you are a frequent visitor, I would advise you to stay in the FQ, just for logistics sake.
