New Orleans must do

Anyone got a "must do" list for New Orleans? This will be our second trip. Did the trolly, Bourbon Street, night and day, Cafe Du monde, Court of Two Sisters, Acme Oyster House. Looking for all that we missed!

The zoo is great. Take a steamboat down the mississippi, then take the trolley back.

Get into the Garden District. Or Magazine Street to some of the antique shops.

Go to Frenchman street in the evening in lieu of Bourbon. Lots of action there now. Take in some jazz at Snug Harbor (check the schedule, not cheap but fun).

Check out Chowhound.com for the latest in restaurants in New Orleans. YOu might like Uglesiches if you liked the Acme. Did you do the French Market? Be sure to venture into the back outer areas where the artists peddle.

Take a limo ride -- New Orleans limo drivers are required to study local history. They can give you a more personal POV. Ask one to take you by Fats Dominos house.

Stand in the no-reservation line at Paul Prudhome's place. Stay in Fauborg-Maurigny for a different residential feel, just outside the french quarter, next to Frenchman Street.

Go to the Funky Butt or Preservation Hall for old-time jazz.

Have a muffaletta sandwich. Someone else knows where the best one is, but I go to that grocery across from the French Market area.

The aquarium was nice, although I liked the one in Monterey better. Also, the French Market is great. You muct try the beignet. They are out of this world.

Central Grocery. :)

Also consider the 2 Park Service visitor centers. Free activities and a daily walking tour. Cemetery tour with Save our Cemeteries- non profit group.

Rock N Bowl is truly different, do a google on it. Zydeco music is very Louisiana. How about a trip out to a plantation home. The museum with the costumes from Carnival is fascinating.

Your list mentioned the things I avoid in New Orleans except duMonde. If you want classic touristy things how about Lafittes Blacksmith shop. Oldest bar in New Orleans in one of the oldest buildings.

Dinner at Galatoires. Old NO families still celebrate birthdays etc here. Excellent food and great service. LMF

I think the D-Day Museum is a must do. A drive up the river to visit several plantations would be good.

Am I the only one that thinks that Central Grocery's Muffalleta is overrated? I like Cafe Maspero much better.

Seconds on Preservation Hall (get in line early) as well as a free walking tour from the park rangers at Jean Lafitte (sp?) National Park.

Buy a pass and visit the three LSU Museums, the two in Jackson Square, and the Mint at the end of the French Market.

Wander into The Gumbo Shop for some Red Beans and Rice, or whatever else is on the menu.

Take the free ferry over to Algiers and visit Mardi Gras world.

Good luck.

Simply the 4 musts for eats- Commanders, Central Grocery, Port of Call, Acme.

WOW! :-)
Thanks for the quick responses. This advice will be used.
Anybody done the "chef's table" at Cammanders Palace? How Mother's Kitchen?

BudgetQueen Jan 24th, 2004 10:51 AM

My opinion only but I have seen a big decline in Mother's, but I still go every trip. :) Probably will be crossed off next trip.

A meal at Jacques-Imos and some music next door at the Maple Leaf could be enjoyable.
Tipitina's was a kick too.

Agree with Dutch on the DDay Museum (goose bumps-allow 2hrs min. if you are really into WW II history) and the fact that the Central Grocery's Muffs have been lacking of late. :'(

I crossed Mothers off my list after my last visit to NO. The wait staff was surely and the place looked remarkably dirty. And I've cut way back on gravy lately.

I would never pass up a chance to eat at Commander's Palace or at least 25 other places in NO. Let the good times roll.

Tandoori_Girl Jan 24th, 2004 02:36 PM

I must be the only one but I really like NOLA's.

Susanz Jan 24th, 2004 02:46 PM

Take the ferry across to Algiers Point and walk along the levee to Mardi Gras World for a tour, eat at Remoulade, Arnaud's casual restaurant next door, have a drink (or more) at Pat O'Brien's.

gyppielou Jan 24th, 2004 02:47 PM

Nope, I love Nola's, great planked fish, well trained staff....it is not a tourist trap to me! Can't say I like the zoo much!

Dan Jan 24th, 2004 07:33 PM

I like NOLA (no 's) very much. It's Emeril's "fun" restaurant and can be either a great meal or slightly chaotic. I've had both but still enjoy the place.

RedETogo Feb 5th, 2004 03:56 PM

The Gumbo Shop in the Quarter makes good Gumbo that is similar to homemade.

Billy Dee Williams was dining at Commanders Palace last time I was there.

The New Orleans Zoo is great.

MoniqueU Feb 5th, 2004 04:26 PM
