New Orleans - Lanaux Mansion (safe at night?)
I've read great things about this B&B, located just across the street from the French Quarter. In terms of daytime walking expeditions, I think it's easy to get anywhere within the Quarter. My one major question, though, is about nighttime safety. I'm wondering if walking from the Bourbon Street jazz clubs and restaurants in the vicinity late at night are safe. From what I can remember of my trip to NOLA many years ago, as you walked East on Bourbon Street, it got darker and more deserted. I may also be remembering it wrong, since it was so long ago, but is that true? I really don't want to take a cab every night. Anyone know?
Thanks, Annie |
Steer clear of Rampart and you'll be fine!

Thanks!

I think that location is fine too. And you are perfectly placed for visiting the jazz clubs on Frenchman St. There is lots of action on Bourbon, of course, but I only remember one club there with jazz from our last trip (a few years back - memory could be getting fuzzy). We found Bourbon to be mostly rock, some R&B, and some hip hop.

Let me add that Bourbon toward Esplanade does get darker, as it's more residential. If you feel it's uncomfortably dark, veer toward the river...

I had no idea the jazz clubs were on Frenchman. Isn't that just outside the Quarter? I think maybe NOLA has changed a bit since I was there so many years ago. Thank you both for letting me know.

And Susan, that last bit of advice sounds very good to me!
