New Orleans Kerlerec house

I'm thinking of staying here for my first trip to NO. It's located on Kerlerec between Dauphine Street and Burgundy Street. Has anyone had any experience w/ this place? What do you think of this neighborhood? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the Kerlerec House, but if you're interested in a B&B, both La Maison Marigny and B&W Courtyards get wonderful reviews. La Maison Marigny is on the quiet end of Bourbon Street and B&W Courtyards is on Chartres.

Thanks, Susan. We are interested in the Kerlerec house because it has a full kitchen and we need a place large enough to accomodate seven adults plus it's pretty economical. This place fits the bill.

I like this neighborhood, but there was a jogger shot there at seven a.m. a few weeks ago. He is now paralyzed. They have, however, caught the shooters.
Hate to be an alarmist, but crime is going up again here and that is a little out of the way. Walking back there after dark would not be advised. Which is too bad because the Marigny is one of the most dynamic parts of town. So many great clubs, restaurants, and if you think the Quarter is interesting people watching, sit over there some time.

Thanks for the heads up, we'll probably use cabs when coming home at night. Since there are seven of us, I'd like to think there is safety in numbers. Being from the SF Bay area, we're pretty used to crime, unfortunately.

I'd take it. It's hard to find a place with kitchens in New Orleans! I know as I did the same search a few years ago and ended up staying in Metairie.

Kelerec St used to be purely residential. It is outside the Quarter so taking cabs would be very wise. It is true that a jogger was shot but the resident's association was supposed to have a meeting with police to address the problem of crime in the area. I would suspect this will lead to stepped up patrols for a while at least.
I don't know anything about the hotel itself. My advice is if you are in a large group & are willing to take precautions as you would anywhere then it should be ok.

Have a great visit!

I tried to send this message directly to Caroline but the e-mail address must be abbreviated.

Caroline:

I read a posting of yours on the Fodors forum page regarding accomodation in New Orleans.

Our family is thinking of spending Christmas in NO and I'm looking for a place (preferably not hotel rooms) where we can stay. There will be 7 or 8 of us.

It sounds like you are or were looking for something similar. Did you stay at the Kelerec House and if so how was it?

If you have any tips to pass along we would really appreciate it.

Many thanks, Andrew

To Caroline and Andrew --

Try the QUARTER HOUSE.... It's a timeshare that rents out used rooms. These are like small apt's and have kitchens. Some sleep up to 8 pp.

Have fun!!!

Allyson Sep 12th, 2002 07:20 AM

Ooopps -- UNUSED rooms!!!

Andrew,

We are going to NO in Oct and rented this place:

http://www.vrbo.com/vrbo/2666.htm

Since there will be four couples going, this house was the biggest and least expensive by far. Sounds like this would be ideal for your family. I was told it's a short cab ride to the French Quarter. If you remind me, I can give you feedback of this place on my return.

This place is on Napoleon Avenue. Not exactly "near" the French Quarter, I wouldn't say. Let us know how it was.
