New Orleans in August
Hi everyone,
I live in Boston and I am going to have a visitor from out of the country in the first couple of weeks of August. I wanted to take her on a weekend trip to somewhere that's not more than 3-4 hours by plane from Boston... She's already been to New York, and Chicago is insanely expensive (I checked priceline and cheaptickets and couldn't find anything that's less than 800 per person for a hotel that's not too far from downtown). So I thought of New Orleans. I've never been and it seems like a great fun place. I just had a couple of questions. Does it get so hot that it will stop us from walking around during the day? Also, as far as I know most of the touristy areas were undamaged by Katrina, right? Barring New Orleans and New York, if anybody else has any suggestions for a weekend trip from Boston, those would be much appreciated as well... |
How about DC and/or Baltimore.

New Orleans is beastly hot in August and it will keep you from walking around. Your neck of the woods is so beautiful at this time of year. What about the Cape or Maine or Newport, RI or somewhere in New England? Why head south? No need to incur airfare.

Chicago at $800? Per person??? For example a club level double room at the Westin River North, a luxury hotel, is available the first few weeks of August for the mid 400s including all taxes. The Palmer House would be in the low to mid 300s. These are per room, not per person.

She's probably talking about hotel and airfare.
Newport RI would be great, or how about Nantucket? Maybe up to Montreal? New Orleans and DC will be way too hot in August, as will a lot of cities I'm afraid. |
We just got back from New Orleans, and while it is true that the areas visitors are most interested in are fine, I don't think I would go in August. In June it was already hot enough. We had one day where it was really too hot to do much of anything and even the other days, we were only really out in the morning and evening - back at the hotel napping or in the pool in the afternoons. August would be even worse.
I'd go with the other recommendations and go someplace in New England. |
New Orleans is MISERABLE in August. It's so hot and humid that I've actually had a hard time catching my breath. Go someplace else!
