New Orleans hotels

My husband and I are going to New Orleans for our 20th wedding anniversary and are looking for recommendations of places to stay. We want to be in the French Quarter and would like something that actually looks and feels like New Orleans as opposed to a sterile hotel that could be anywhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

We are heading to New Orleans on 5/8 and are staying at the Omni Royal after reading many good reviews online. My husband signed up for their free program and they are giving us many benefits.

Hotel Monteleone without a doubt. Very New Orleans feel, the staff are very friendly. Well located in the Quarter on Royal. Carousel Bar is great too.

Monteleone and Dauphine is definately great choices. I also like the Windsor Court Hotel if you want a little more refined hotel and some extra pampering.

Check out the restaurant videos here www.lizreyes.com

The Windsor court also has another advantage - it is the night life home of one of my two favorite New Orleans jazz singers - Anais St John.

We went last year for our anniversary and stayed at the Dauphine. I can't say that it is as "different" as you may want, but it was a lovely place to stay. It was conveniently located in the French Quarter - has a small pool, a great bar and wonderful service. Just being in the heart of the French Quarter was enough of a different feel for us.

I love the Royal Sonesta. It's a grand old NO hotel in a great location on Bourbon. However, unless you want to be awake until the wee hours of the morning, you don't want a room on Bourbon, but a corner room overlooking the pool.

My mother used to talk about when it was shocking for an Irish-American Catholic to be dating an Italian-American Catholic. After all, they lived in different neighborhoods! The Italian Catholics weren't considered "catholic" enough for the Irish, LOL!

We dearly love the Inn on Bourbon and stay there twice a year, - it's located near the center of the Quarter so a car isn't necessary. The rooms facing Bourbon Street are noisy (we figure we can sleep when we get home, we're in NOLA for
Gawd's sake!) but the rooms facing the pool/courtyard are much quieter. If you're looking for a hotel not in the middle of the action I'd suggest either the Place D'Armes or the Hotel Provincial. The Hotel St. Marie gets mixed reviews, but most people like it also.
