New Orleans hotel
We are going to a football game at the Superdome in December. We will be in town for only the weekend. Would you stay by the stadium and shuttle into the French Quarter or the other way around.
I am thinking it would be better to stay in the French Quarter and shuttle into the game. Also any suggestions on a nice moderate to deluxe hotel?
Anyone stayed at the Hilton Riverside? How is that area and how many blocks from the French Quarter?
Thanks for any info!
Brooke

Brooke, the Hilton Riverside is right on the edge of the Quarter. I believe it's 14 blocks to the Dome. I think you would be better off staying in the Quarter and shuttling to the Dome. You will spend the afternoon at the Dome, but probably most of your time will be spent in the Quarter. If you opt to stay at the Dome, the Hilton there (at the Dome) is connected to it and offers shuttles into the Quarter. A cab ride to/from the Quarter/Dome is $5 - $7. Since you mentioned the Hilton, I would also suggest you check into the Marriot on Canal (a few blocks from the Hilton Riverside) which offers similar accommodations for around the same rate. There is also a Sheraton in the same vicinity. Please let me know if you need any more info.

Hi Brooke,
I'm sure that Meg's advice is right on (I think she lives in NO). I would like to pass on some extra info also, we just came back from a week in New Orleans and stayed at a place called Bienville House Hotel. It was suggested by another visiting fodorite and I must say that for us it was perfect. It's on Decatur in the FQ and within walking distance to most places. Cabs were fairly cheap when needed as well.
The biggest drawback to Bienville house might be it's lack of room service - but as we quickly found out, the local food is soo good we did not desire to order in anyway. Otherwise we found it reasonable, clean and over all well located.
I have to add that we had a GREAT time in NOLA!!!

Hello,
Well I have decided to stay in the French Quarter. So I I already heard the suggestions of Sonesta, Omni, and Bienville. I am looking for a hotel in a good area, I like mid size to large hotels. Don't care for B and B's. Taking my mother in law and she would die if we were in an area with lots of strip joints or topless dancers, etc.
Don't want to give a heart attack yet.
But hey......if she gets on my nerves.
Is the area where the Hilton Riverside is at a little nicer? I've heard that it is right on the trolley line if we needed to go anywhere. Is there a lot of things to do down in that area. She does like the casino and we will probaly will not be frequenting the night clubs.
(If we can leave her at the casino we will probaly take off to a club)
Any suggestions are welcome, (other than leaving MIL at home)

Another big hotel choice that gets pretty good reviews on this site is the Hotel Montelone. It's on the edge of the Quarter and is close to the casino.
I'm not a fan of the Hilton or the whole Riverplace Mall thing, but that's just me. We were forced to stay there once and it was fine. It simply has no New Orleans character to it.

Its been awhile since my last visit to NO, but I think Le Meridien Hotel may also suit your needs. It's across Canal Street from the French Quarter (very conveniently located), offers nice accomodations, and is probably walking distance to the Superdome (I think its about 7 or 8 blocks...maybe someone can confirm this). It gives you the location you are looking for, the level of accomodations you want, without the seemier side of NO at your hotel doorstep.

If you are looking for a nice hotel near the casino, Hilton is a great choice. You are correct, there is a trolly that will bring you closer to the quarter area. Also you will have access to nice shopping mall (a great place to escape the daytime heat). Sunday Champagne brunch at the Hilton is great!

I agree on Le Meridien. Nice hotel, very friendly staff, great location. Right on top of the French Quarter, as well as being close to the river, trolley, etc. And we found walking at night was no problem as long as you don't go down any scary looking streets.
