Safeway near Royal Lahaina

Do I understand correctly that there is a Safeway within walking distance of the Royal Lahiana hotel? Do grocery stores in Maui sell wine or do you have to go to a liquor store? I know Royal Lahiana is not a top notch hotel as far as rooms go, but we got such a great rate with breakfast included that we booked for our first trip to Hawaii.

No Safeway within walking distance of the Royal Lahaina. The nearest is three miles away in Lahaina.

Grocery stores sell, wine, beer, liquor, etc.

If you look at the Safeway website at www.safeway.com you'll find a store locator, driving directions, and even ads with the weekly specials.

Safeway is across the road from Old Lahaina Luau, perhaps that is what you are thinking of.

Bring your hometown Safeway card, or sign up for one in Lahaina, great discounts, saves you a bundle.

We have a Tom Thumb card and as the same company owns both can we use our card in a Safeway?

All you need is the phone number you used when you signed up for your Safeway/Vons/Pavilions/Genuardi's/Tom Thumb/etc club card. You just enter it at the check stand when checking out. If you don't live an area serviced by the Safeway company, you can go to their website and fill in the information for the club card and take it with you.

You can also get a Safeways card when you arrive. When we were there in December 2003, I started shopping and my husband went to the service desk and got the free savings card. Then we had it for check out. Safeways is in the Cannery Mall on your way to Kaanapali and your Condo. (Royal Lahaina) You will pass the mall on your way to your Condo from the Kahalui Airport. Long's Drug is also in the this mall. We saved the Safeways card and will use it again when we leave for Maui again in 7 days!

It's been about five years ago that we visited Maui and stayed at the Royal Lahaina Hotel and we thought it was great. Our room had a nice balcony with a perfect view of the ocean. We could see both Lanai and Molokai. Our room was decent size with lots of closet space, a good bathroom, and if I remember correctly we had a small fridge.

I have heard others put it down, but as far as we were concerned, we liked the beautiful wood paneling, nice grounds and gardens, shows on the terrace poolside daily, etc. Sure it's an old hotel (the first on Kaanapali I understand) but we rather liked the feel of an older property, compared to the sort of plastic glitz of some of the newer hotels. I hope it hasn't changed since we were there.

Thanks to all. Giovanna: Your comments are greatly appreciated! Looks like this hotel is in a great beach area.
