New Orleans experts...best tours??Safe for single woman???
I was wondering if anyone could tell me which tours that they would reccommend in New Orleans and with which tour company. I will be there for 4 days located in the French Quarter with no car. Also do you think it would be safe for a woman by herself to go out in the evening for a ghost tour or dinner?

I hate to be an alarmist, but as a very street smart New Yorker even I felt uncomfortable recently walking alone in the French Quarter in the evening. The small streets are not well lit and there were few people on them when I was there. If you stay on the main streets, you should be fine, but keep alert.
I know some people will say I'm being ridiculous, but I was there just last month and didn't feel comfortable at night. |
Yes, I feel it is safe for a single woman. I live here and have never had any problems. Of course, I don't wear jewelry, carry a large purse (pickpockets) or walk down desolate side streets.
Check out www.hauntedhistorytours.com or www.tourneworleans.com You will be on the tour with a group of people. They meet at places on or near Bourbon St. The summer is slow season here and it will only get more crowded in the coming weeks. |
as a new orlean myself, as a man, i wouldn't let my wife/woman go alone in the streets of n.o... although i love this city, i don't trust it. and as both of them said, avoid those side streets.

Beachbarbie,
I go to New Orleans on business all time. At least once a month. I am a female and travel by myself. I always feel comfortable and I have had absolutely no problems. I went to college there, so I know the area, but that was a long time ago. I agree that post-Katrina some areas are desolate. But, even pre-Katrina I would not have walked around certain areas of the French Quarter alone. That does not mean, however, that you can't take a cab when need be. Don't be afraid of the city. Tourists are treated well, especially now. But do take normal precautions, just as you would in NYC or any other place you aren't familiar with. When will you be there and where are you staying? Postal, I travel to NYC alot, and it is such a safe city, really. So many people around most of the time, a cab around every corner. You aren't being ridiculous, but comparing NYC to any other city is just not a fair comparison. I feel safer on the streets of NYC than most other cities in the world. But, good advice to bachbarbie to stay on the main streets and stay alert. |
Thanks for all of the replies. I am going Tomorrow and am staying at the Chateau Orleans which is located at Burgundy and Iberville one block from Canal street. I will be very cautious and will take a cab if my dinner or ghost tour etc is after dark. Thank you
