New Orleans Early December - too early for Christmas?

We are thinking of going to New Orleans around December 8, 2009 with our daughter who will be 14 months at the time. Will the Christmas festivities have already started? The concerts in the churches, the christmas market in the French Quarter, the decorations, Christmas menus at the restaurants? Is there anything I'm missing? We've always wanted to see New Orleans at Christmastime, but we can't go right during Christmas week. Any tips about enjoying New Orleans' Christmas spirit would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure about formal events, but certainly any decorations that are put up for Xmas will be up by the 8th (likely just after Thanksgiving). We used to always visit in early/mid Dec and found it the perfect time - lesser crowds and the spirit of the approaching holiday.

This will be a lovely time to visit! There are free concerts in the Cathedral and special dinner menu in many of our favorite restaurants. We went last year and highly recommend it! Karen
