New Orleans Beer
 

In addition to needing a restaurant, we need to know the good beers in New Orleans. What should we look for? Thanks again!

Abita Amber

Dixie is not currently being brewed in Nola, but they still have it. Dixie & Abita are the two primary brews. The Crescent City Brew House also makes some good beer(s).

Take the St. Charles streetcar to Carrollton, about a buck forty each way. Depart and walk one half block to Cooter Browns. The streetcar provides a great view of classic New Orleans homes, Cooter's is a bar and has a huge domestic and international beer selection and excellent beer food (although some have said that it has dropped in quality in recent years). Try their cheese frys. The levee is just across the street and provide an impressive raw view of the Mississippi. Also, one of the best N.O. restaurants (Brightson's) is in this quaint New Orleans neighborhood and shopping area. You need reservations, but it is casual dining.

The d.b.a in New Orleans is the sister beer bar to the one in NYC...fabulous bar. Great selection, and great vibe too. There may be live music as well - check out the schedule on the website.

You don't mention your age, but Cooter Brown's can be swarming with college kids and sometimes it serves as a sports bar, if that matters to you.

Abita beer is brewed locally and is very popular. Give it a try.

Crescent City Brewhouse is close to the FQ.

Try the Blackened Voodoo Lager from Dixie Brewing Co. They were not up and running when we were in New Orleans a year and a half ago, but I recently found some at our local BevMo - happy day, happy day :)

I also enjoy the Turbodog from Abita. The Abita Amber is pretty good too - can find it pretty much everywhere.

We were not impressed with the Crescent City Brewhouse though - I'd give them another try, maybe they were off their game or something. When we were there, they didn't have any dark selections, and while the marzen was decent, the hefeweizen may as well have been water.

Dixie products are cuurently being brewed in Milwaukee (I think) or someplace similar. They still have the same fine quality as when they were brewed in Nola.

"fine quality"? Not a description I would use for Dixie.

What about Jax? Is that still around?

Apparently you've never had the Blackened Voodoo. Jax brewery has not made beer in over 30 years. They currently have a mall in the space.

Yes, I would definitely categorize Blackened Voodoo as "fine quality". Good good stuff.

I hope they get their operations up and running in New Orleans again.

I didn't care for Crescent City either. $6 for a glass of amber swill.

A glass of cold Abita and a plate of oysters at Acme and I'm in celestial joy.

Thank you all for the beer replies...we have even more to look forward to now! Hats off to Bleason for the Carrollton particulars and Bayou Gal for reminding me that I need to state that we want to avoid the college kids(we're 46 and 47 yrs). You all are great!

Crescent City does make a great Kolsch-style beer, when they make it.

Abita Turbo Dog is the fav with my DH and Cooter Brown's is great fun. My brother used to live in an apartment just above the place! In addition to the beer, my DH says the fresh oysters there are great.

A bunch of us in our 50's had a grand time at Cooter Brown's a few years ago. Incredible beer selection.

Hoosier, don't write off Cooter Brown's if you want to travel down St Charles on the streetcar then stop in for a brewsky. Maybe phone ahead when you're in NO and see what's going on there. We've had some nice meetings with friends there. I was just giving you a head's up, just in case.
