New Orleans Bars and Music
 

We are going to New Orleans Feb 13, need help with names of good bars and bands. Mainly jazz and blues at night. Thanx!

Patouts on Bourbon St. The place rocks and the food is even edible. Usually no cover charge. Rock on.

Big Al Carson and the Bluesmasters at the Funky Pirate on Bourbon. Touristy location, but a great entertainer. Noise level is even pretty reasonable.

big al carson was great.. relaxed atmosphere too. I just returned from ther... also at the howling wolf the dual piano number right now is a blast.

Check out Snug Harbor for jazz.(You've got to cross Esplanade to get there. It's well known so folks can give you directions.

I second the recommendation for Snug Harbor. It's just over in Fauburg Marigny on Frenchman - from the FQ walk down Royal, cross Esplanade and Frenchman is 1 or 2 blocks further. On that same block there are a couple restaurants, coffee houses, and other small places to hang out. <BR><BR>A good place for blues is the Funky Butt on Rampart. It's a smallish club that really gets going about 10pm. <BR><BR>Preservation Hall right in the middle of the FQ is also a good place. They don't serve any drinks there, it's just a concert hall, but you can hear some really good music so definitely check it out, even if you only stay for a little while. <BR><BR>While we were in NO, most of the bands in the clubs on Bourbon were playing rock n roll. Some sounded really good, some not so good. I think it's a hit and miss kind of thing. The nice thing is that most clubs have no cover charge so you can easily go fromm club to club. <BR><BR>I have heard that for good Cajun and Zydeco the Mid-City Lanes is a good place to go. We didn't make it out there but we will next time we are in town.

For R &amp; B - Tipitinas on Tchoupitoulas and Napolean. They usually feature a Cajun Fais Do Do on Sunday nights with small cover, great dancing, and free red beans and rice. Also, the Rock n' Bowl (Mid City Lanes) is a good choice.<BR>

The Tropical Isle is a fund place. It's in the French Quarter, on a side street off of Boubon. Sorry, can't remember the name. There is live music and I've always had a great time there, some times too much fun. Be ready to experience a parade while you're there, Mardi Gras season will be underway.
