Actually, I have friends who live in the Garden District, and I enjoy getting out and visiting the historic plantations in bayou country. But face it, most visitors, particularly 1st time visitors, spend 99% of their time in the Quarter or at the casino. And what are the top activities in the French Quarter? I'll let you answer that one. (Searching for the perfect antique on Royal Street doesn't qualify as a legitimate answer.)

LOL - yeah, I think you are right about the 1st time visitors to NO spending most of their time right there at the clubs. When we were there a couple years ago (1st trip) we didn't go into the casino and people were amazed "You mean you DIDN'T go to the CASINO!?!"

We did a ton of stuff while we were there, but I can't wait to go back because there is so much more that we didn't see - just ran out of time, you know.

For souveniers, check out the French Market just down river from Cafe Du Monde - same stuff as on Bourbon and Decatur, just cheaper prices. Beads are always a good souvenier. We also brought back masks for people, a couple t-shirts, some magnets, cookbooks, and that kind of thing. We took all out souveniers over to Mail Boxes Etc and had them shipped home so we didn't have to worry about lugging them with us on the plane.
We took a plantation tour while we were there, I believe it took about an hour from the FQ to the plantations. We went with Spinato Tours which picked us up at the hotel in a van with about 10 other people and took us out to Laura and Oak Alley plantations. It was a lot of fun and reallly interesting.

Mels, The only thing you're going to bring back from NOLA are beads (you have to EARN them like Ccolor does) and a hangover....If we do it right!!!! 
While we usually spend about 90% of a NOLA trip in the FQ, the trips thru the Garden Dist. are still very nice and make us want to live there every time we go thru.

Hmm...if I were to go to New Orleans tomorrow:
I'd go to Cafe Maspero and have a muffaletta (sp?) and a cold beer. Then I'd head to the Napolean House and drink a Pimm's Cup or two. Cafe du Monde is also a must--another touristy suggestion is a graveyard tour or French Quarter tour. If you are there on a weekend I think Commander's Palace is fantastic for brunch ($30-40/person). I could go on and on...I wish I was waking up to the sound of street sweepers tomorrow morning...

Kal, 61 days sounds like such a long time! Is it really that long off?? I can hardly wait. By the way, I rarely get hangovers (maybe 3 in my whole life 
amp; ), which should give you an idea of how much I can consume.

Make when you make your pilgramage to Bourbon St. make sure to stop by the Krazy Corner. There's a guy in there that looks like James Brown on a Slim Fast Diet, but the man can saaaaang! The band is awesome!
Also if you get a chance & ya got a little dough left (after the visit to Harrah's) splurge on a visit to Ritz Carlton spa. That was the best part of my stay! Oh yeah, have a hurrican for me (lol).

Don't forget to go down to the square - there are some GREAT jazz musicians playing down there. And don't forget: if they are good, drop them some cash! It doesn't have to be much at all (even a buck or two would be appreciated) And I say skip the casino, they are the same everywhere. Margaritaville is a must-miss, too, IMO

See the French Market, take a streetcar ride and eat at Petunia's, Acme Oyster House and have a Hurricane at O'Briens. Be brave and try a Lucky Dog.

We were there last Thanksgiving, and had a BLAST. Of course, we brought back beads from Bourbon Street (we arrived on Tuesday, and as the week went on, we had to work harder to get them!), so on Mardi Gras this year, I wore beads to work (medical school at major university). Several people recognized them for what they were, but one group of people stopped me and said, "did you get those for going on Jerry Springer?" Crack me up!! I've never seen that show, but can only assume I should have been on there after having confessed to something weird...
For a great start or end to your tour of Bourbon Street, I would HIGHLY recommend the Carousel Bar in the Monteleone (sp?) Hotel--we had a really good time there "spinning."
