New Orleans-- 3 nights in October

Heading to New Orleans in October only there 3nights..( in our 30's)
Must sees? must eats? would love any suggestions..
Also, would like to try one of Emeril Lagasse's restaurants? Suggestions?

As much as I love Emeril, I heard NOLA's isn't as good as other restaurants in N.O. A good place for lunch is Mother's. It's a few blocks off Canal St in the Business District. My Mom grew up in N.O. and we found that Mother's had the best Po' Boys in town. It's not cheap, but the food is down home good. If you have a car, go out to Uglesich's (not sure of the spelling). Non of these two places is fancy, and you actually have to order and wait for them to call out your name for your meal. Mostly self-serve, but the food is delish.

NOLA is a good choice. It is always debated on this forum but you'll get a good meal there. Ditto for Emeril's and Delmonico. To me, the question is "are there BETTER restaurants" and I think there are. Bayona, Peristyle, Cuvee, and August immediately come to mind and you'll pay the same if not less!

Our most favorite and FUN place is Jacques-Imo's Cafe. A little off the beaten track. They take reservations 30 days in advance.

Uglesich's is one of our favorite hole in the wall restaurants to eat while we are in NOLA. If you don't have a car, it is worth a cab ride, but it is also only open for lunch Monday thru Friday as it does close at 3:00pm. Our suggestion is to make it there early (10:30-10:45am) or make it late (2:00pm) all other times there is a long line waiting to get in. It's not cheap, but it is fantastic!

First of all, I really love New Orleans!!!

Sleep when you get home; there is way too much to do and see in only 3 days.

Must see: You will undoubtedly find most of the French Quarter. But, don't neglect the Garden District and most of Magazine Street. Also, The zoo is great as is the "D" day museum, if you can fit it in.

Be sure to make it to at least one of the best N.O. music venues some night: Snug Harbor, Funky Butt, Donna's, Mid City Rock and Bowl, and the Maple Leaf quickly come to mind. If you really want an authentic NOLA musical experience, catch Kermit Ruffins at Vaughn's in Bywater for a midnight show (only Wednesday, I think).

Oh, let me give you some "can't miss" places for dinner: Galatoire's, and Jacques-Imo's Cafe, (no reservations); the lines can get long.

Clancy's, Upperline, Commander's Palace, Bacco, Peristyle, Mr. B's Bistro, Brigtsen's, Delmonico, and the Pelican Club are all unique and great. Reservations are recommended, if not required at these places.

PS: In my opinion, Emeril's best restaurant is Delmonico; it is very, very good, but quite pricey.

Antoine's, Arnauld's and The Court of the Two Sisters are all very much overrated. Oh, whatever you do, don't dare eat on the Natchez Riverboat or at Harrah's casino. DOUBLE YUK!

Okay, as a former resident and frequent visitor here are my thoughts . . .

Haven't yet been to Jacques-Imo's but have heard wonderful things

Hated Galetoires - pretentious service and mediocre food at best

We went to NOLA last time (one of Emerill's) and loved it - and our expectations were pretty high

Favorite restaurants we hit every time: Commander's Palace, Brennan's for Breakfast, Mother's, Acme Oyster, Cafe du Monde

We also enjoyed the jazz room at Arnaud's on our last visit.

For day trips, Middendorfs is great for catfish and the drive and restaurant are an experience in themselves. Also enjoyed a swamp tour on a fan boat - avoid the bigger boats - what a bore! The smaller fan boats with less people are the way to go - you'll remember it for a lifetime!

Another vote for Acme. The atmosphere is fun fun fun and the food is great. It can get pretty loud & crazy, so be prepared.

We loved the jazz room at Arnaud's. Went last December for our anniversary -they made a fuss & comped us dessert! A wonderful, memorable meal.

Cafe du Monde is a must see and a must eat! The iced cafe au lait is wonderful, and the beignets are out of this world! Added plus: proximity to all those talented street performers at the square!

Hey just wondered when you were going to be New Orleans. Will be there with another couple(in our 30's). We are going Oct 16-20.
Just wondering.

jaly, We'll be there 10-24 thru 28 so leave some beer and beads for us.
