New Milford, Ct. - possible to visit without a car?

I've read somewhere that it's possible to take Bonanza Bus to New Milford, CT. Is it possible to get around town without having to rent a car?

New Milford is a lovely town...but why do you want to go there and what do you expect to see? Are you talking about a day trip, overnight or what?

Hi Howard -

Just looking to spend some quality time with mom. Thought it would be great for us to do a one or to nighter out there and explore the Elephant's Trunk and antique shops. What do you think? :)

hi there. you will definitely need a rental car to get around this area of CT. it's quite lovely/quaint, but not lots of public transportation. if, however, you'd be happy staying at a bed & breakfast/inn at the center of the town, you could get away with no car that way (but you wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of days doing that, i'd guess). very good restaurants are w/in walking distance, and there's even a small movie theater (the "old-fashioned" kind--w/less than a gazillion screens!)
: )
have fun, and enjoy our fair state!

Where are you coming from? If it's NYC, you have other easier to reach areas, such as all along the Hudson Valley.

LRB - thanks for the tips. Would you know if the Elephant's Trunk is easily accessible from the center of town? The main idea is to do some flea marketing/antiquing, etc. Even if just to browse =)

Howard - yup, NYC. My hopes are up on the Elephants Trunk but do you have any other suggestions as to getting away for the weeknd to do some bargain hunting without a car?

Thanks again!!

i believe the elephant's trunk is on rte. 202/danbury road--that's probably more than walking distance away from the town center (say, 5 miles maybe...).

LRB - is there taxi service avail? expensive?

getawaytime Apr 29th, 2004 09:21 AM

*bumping*

Would anyone know if it would be too expensive to take a cab / car service from the center of town to the Elephant's Trunk?

Also, any B&B recommendations?

Thanks all! :)

Rent a car.

kaudrey Apr 29th, 2004 10:38 AM

Loki - I was thinking the same thing!

Not to be mean, but for 2 days, why not just rent a car? You'll be able to get around easier, you don't have to worry about taxis and things, and you won't feel stuck.

If you don't want to rent a car in NYC, take the train/bus to CT and rent a car there.

By the time you taxi all over the place, it would probably cost as much anyway, and it would waste a lot of time - you'd have to call cabs, wait for them etc.

Small towns in CT are not like NYC, you can't walk everywhere or take a subway.

Thanks Loki & Karen! I'd really rather not drive but since it seems to be the better option, I'll look into it and else where (where I won't need to). Just not feeling up to it this time. heh!

Your best bet is to stop in and get a car rental in Danbury which is about 25-30 minutes south of New Milford. Danbury is a large city with more bus activity too. There's a lot of road contruction on Rt 7 during the weekday in New Milford so the travel time varies. The Elephant's Trunk is in Brookfield which is between Danbury and New Milford on RT 7 (Danbury Road). On a Sunday morning, you can get from the center of New Milford to the elephants Trunk in about 15 minutes.. I haven't been to the Trunk for a few years but you have to get there early for the good stuff. I think it opens at 8am or 7am, maybe someone else knows, it's been a few years since I was there but it's something to see.. Lot's of neat junk.. lol

i think you can also take Metro-North Railroad from the city to Danbury, then I'm sure you can call a cab there, but as for going around New Milford, you would really need a car. Not everything's in close walking distance

I live in Danbury. Elephant's Trunk is a fun place to visit, all kinds of "treasures". It is on Route 7, and you definetely need a car to get around in this neck of the woods. Taking the train to Danbury and renting a car is the best way to go. Lots of interesting places around New Milford, Lake Waramaug, Kent Falls..but need a car and it really is not that difficult to get around. Have a nice visit. Great new restaurant on Bank Street, can't recall the first part of the name but ends with 51...
