New Mexico roads in April?

Would the drive across from Ontario Canada to New Mexico be a tough one in APRIL? Thinking of going up from New Mexico to visit friends in Cody Wyoming as well before returning to Ontario. Any comments about snow / roads?

Also - Chaco Canyon sounds interesting but for 4x4 only? Is that correct? Can you get into it by regular passenger car or worth the drive (again being in April)?

You are unlikely to find snow in NM in April, except in the higher elevations. Not saying 100% you won't, just unlikely. You'll have a better chance of having problem on your way through the mid-west. Pick a more southerly route - like I-71/65/40.

Going to up Cody, WY, you're more likely to see the white stuff. Stay on the main interstates and US highways.

thanks. I'll take your advice. Might be able to put the trip off until late May, but not likely.

Given how little snow we've had this year, you're highly unlikely to have any problems with the roads in New Mexico.

If you enter Chaco Canyong from the north end, its just a dirt road for 20 miles or so, so need for a 4x4. We were there in early march, which meant it was cold at night, but warmed up nicely in the day which made for great hiking conditions. Pretty neat ruins/pictographs at the park, so its definitely worth the stop and depending on when you go, you might be the only ones there.

Some of the big ruins are right off the park road, so you can see them and not spend a lot of time in the park. But there are some nice hikes that will take a few hours, one to see the Supernovae pictograph and another hike lets you peer over some of the ruins from the cliff above. Both are worth taking if you have the time.
