New Jersey Vacation

Thinking about taking a short trip down the coast to New Jersey. Is Atlantic City or Cape May a nice place to go for a week? Are these nice clean quiet places. If not, where should I go in Jersey?

Clark Jul 24th, 2002 01:50 PM

Isn't the phrase "New Jersey-Vacation" an oxymoron?

xxx Jul 24th, 2002 02:41 PM

cape may, yes.
atlantic city, no.

dale Jul 24th, 2002 02:42 PM

Robert: skip atlantic city, but cape may is a lovely, quaint town with a nice beach and boardwalk. Other nice shore towns are Margate, Ventnor, Ocean City, Wildwood Crest and Long Beach Island.

Clark: you're the moron. Get a clue.

jane Jul 24th, 2002 03:09 PM

If I were you I would skip Atlantic city.

NJ Jul 24th, 2002 04:21 PM

I was going to use the same response as Clark. Both locations are dumps.

Is someone forcing you to spend your vacation in Jersey? if not, I can't imagine why you would even consider it.

micky Jul 26th, 2002 01:38 PM

Robert: Ignore the trolls and come to Jersey. For those in the know, it's a great place to vacation.

go Jul 26th, 2002 02:12 PM

Only someone named Mickey would think NJ is a step up as a vacation destination.

Robert, you said a short trip down the coast. Where are you coming from? If it's north of Jersey, there are any number of superior vacation destinations to choose from. The Jersey shore is by far the worst choice on the East coast. And yes, I've been there. I imagine those who think it's nice have never been anywhere else.

xx Jul 26th, 2002 02:19 PM

if new jersey is so bad for vacations how come tourism is second only to pharmacuticals for state revenue? last year tourism brought in over 31 billion dollars in profit for the state. obviously someone goes there!

yikes Jul 26th, 2002 02:22 PM

Good God we've been invaded by a troupe of anti-Jersey Fodorks!

the Jul 26th, 2002 02:24 PM

Yeah, the poor shmucks who live there and don't know any better.

To answer Robert's question. No, Atlantic City is not nice, not clean and not quiet. It looks decrepit, full of seedy looking people and like a slum on the outskirts. It's HORRIBLE.

LOL Jul 26th, 2002 03:33 PM

It if outskirts are so disgusting, why was my last tax assessment in Atlantic County over $475,000 for a 1/2 acre property?
Its Jul 26th, 2002 03:43 PM

Was that with or without a house?

Atlantic City is a dump. There is no denying it, unless of course you are blind. And let's not forget the crowd it attracts, the polyester, white trash hordes bussed in to feed the slot machines. Oh yeah, it's a beautiful spot...

LOL Jul 26th, 2002 03:47 PM

That assessment is with a house. 3,000 square feet. 1/2 acre property. 4 BRs, 3 BAs. In Linwood.
xxx Jul 26th, 2002 04:19 PM

Who cares how much your assessment was? That is kind of sad that you are posting it on a public board.

jorge Jul 26th, 2002 05:47 PM

I am leagaly blind and yes Atlantic City is ugly.. Im from CT. two days ago I visited my famaly around west new youk. and when I got there I tried washing my face. sudanly my eyes started burning for 5 minuts. then I tried taking a sip of the water and my cousn yelled out STOP don't drink the water.. I've been too third world couutries where the water was cleaner

For those that might know which beaches were closed down yesterday 07/23/03...

ROBERT don't mind the jersey haters just go and see if you join the club after you come back. PLEASE POST

Bob,
I live in South Jersey, and I would recommend Cape May. There are some very nice bed and breakfasts and alot to do in the town besides go on the beach. Tons of shopping, usually craft shows, lots of restaurants, all victorian houses. Atlantic City is a good day trip from Cape May, maybe an hour and a half away, just to check out the casinos. There are also nice restaurants and alot of good shows in the summer in Atlantic City. Yeah, the surrounding town and beach is not beautiful, but it worth the trip just to see what is there.
By the way, I have been to alot of beaches including some in Hawaii, the Carribean and the French Riveria, and you might laugh, but I like the Jersey shore. There's always something going on, the sand is soft, and the water is not too cold (in July and August, anyway)and it's fun.

Dumb Ass Jul 27th, 2002 07:57 AM

Check the internet -- the Atlantic City area has been awarded the best water award (drinking) for the last 4 or 5 years.
Stephanie Jul 27th, 2002 09:48 AM

Why, why, why does NJ always get so much flack? It's actually a very nice state with some nice beaches. Go to Ocean City or Cape May.

xxx Jul 27th, 2002 11:31 AM

Probably because the people who defend it tend to be quite nasty about it. Don't care for New Jersey one way or the other but some of the posters I could do without.

Elizabeth Jul 27th, 2002 12:22 PM

Sorry you aren't getting more useful information, and I wish I had more for you. The Jersey Shore itself is quite beautiful, white beaches and exhilirating surf. The different towns are quite different in character, and though I went there in the summer as a child, that was too long ago for my info to be good now.

However, I know a couple of things: Cape May is nice, and Ocean Grove is nice. I think most of the Jersey Shore is vacation places for families who own or rent houses, rather than for visitors who stay in hotels etc--these two places however ARE set up for visitors.

Cape May is famous for all its Victorian restored places. The Mainstay is famous, and then I myself love the Chalfonte, which is really a 19th century type hotel that has survived. I think it's a landmark. It is not expensive, and it is charming.

jorge Jul 27th, 2002 01:08 PM

I've also been to the french roviara. Bali. and other so called nice beaches...and jerseys sand tops them all. I don't know if the sand is trucked in. but who cares..

im Jul 27th, 2002 01:21 PM

Jorge, the French Riviera isn't known for it's sand, having been there, I'm sure you realize it's all pebbles. It's known for it's unbeatable ambiance, world class hotels, shopping, fine restaurants, beautiful people, etc, etc.

Comparing the Riviera to the Jersey Shore is like comparing a McDonalds happy meal to a meal at Gramercy Tavern. Absurd.

Relieved Jul 27th, 2002 01:25 PM

Fear not Robert...

According to Dumb Ass, you can drink the water. I guess that means New Jersey is great in every other way too...lol

For people leaving in the northeast the Jersey Shore is a fun, economical, family oriented vacation. Memories are made at the Jersey Shore. The sand, the beach and all of the activities cannot be beat. I have been to Hawaii, California, Rhode Island, Mass, Florida and Connecticut and the Jersey Shore is just as if not more beautiful then some of the other shores. Hawaii is beautiful but the sand is volcanic and not as soft. California is also beautiful but the ocean is freezing except for parts of Southern Ca. in August and Sept. Rhode Island waters and Mass. waters are also very cold. Florida beaches are beautiful and the sand is soft but you must fly there or spend hours in the car from the Northeast and hassle with airports. So these are just a few of the reasons why the Jersey Shore is great. It may not be as High class but in my book it cannot be beat, especially if you live in the Northeast.

jorge Jul 27th, 2002 02:39 PM

IMSUREYOUVE BEEN
I was just trying too give jersey a bone. it's easy too tear into it..hell the locals help you out... but if you want me too say the truth. the jersey shore reminds me more of some of the beaches in PENANG (malaysia) where you sea garbage and crap floating by..

damn the whole thing is pebles I thought it was just Cannes and Nice..

xxx Jul 27th, 2002 03:50 PM

Can we end this thread now? Call in what it is, not the best or worst place to go to the beach for a family vacation.

Karen Jul 27th, 2002 04:35 PM

Go to Avalon or Stone Habour. The beach is great. There's a lot to do. And you could just spend your time driving up and down the streets looking at all the beautiful houses. It's the 140th richest town in the country. Almost all the houses are over a million dollars. Beautful! It's close enough to Wildwood if you have to go to a boardwalk. The Cape May Zoo is nearby. Stone Harbour has a great little street for shopping much like Cape May.

Sandy Jul 27th, 2002 08:00 PM

Simple, if you haven't been to the Jersey Shore, you should go. Every place on earth has some redeeming value and the one who can't find it has the problem. If you want a quiet, romantic getaway, Cape May; if you want casinos, Atlantic City. It's simple really.

http://www.scenic-america.com/newjersey/jerseyshore.htm

suzanne Jul 28th, 2002 04:53 AM

Avalon & Stone Harbor are nice, quiet, and clean, and also have some good nightlife. If you get tired of the beach or if it's cloudy, take a short drive down to Wildwood for some rides, games, and sinful food on the boardwalk.
