New Jersey coast (Ocean City, Cape May, or nearby) for New Years?

My girlfriend and I are hoping to eschew the general madness that goes along with attending a lavish New Years party this year and escape to the seaside to welcome in 2008, and we're looking at Ocean City or Cape May (or the surrounding area) as a possible destination. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions in terms of where to stay? Oceanfront views would be wonderful, and something not too extraordinarily priced would be even more wonderful!

Engleside Inn in Beach Haven is offering a holiday room package. They also have an excellent dining room and lively bar and appear to be forgoing the hats and horns business. Their ocean front rooms are a real treat.

You may not care but I wanted to point out that Ocean City, NJ is a dry town. You won't find alcohol anywhere there.

Nothing to stop you from "importing" a little something in your room.

Cape May would be a great choice. Lots of great restaurants and a good variety of places to stay.

I will be staying at Congress Hall in Cape May Sunday, December 9. I'll post a review when I return.

Check this Web site for Jersey Shore information: MyJerseyShore.com

Depending on your tastes, OC may be a good choice. They have a great 1st Nite Celebration that can be accessed from the OC Chamber of Commerce. They do sell out! It is truly a small town this time of year with limited hotels. I could only recommend the Port O'Call or Watson's for lodging. Grace Realty or Monoghan's might also help with a weekend package in a privately-owned condo. Cape May is a very easy, 1/2 hour drive and AC is even less.Feel free to ask for other suggestions for meals, etc.

You may prefer Cape May. We love both, but we go to Ocean City for the family-friendly activities and beach and prefer Cape May when the kids are with the grandparents and we are free to stroll the streets with the beautiful homes and visit the charming stores and antique spots. Our favorite spot, though, is Stone Harbor, which is halfway between the two. We usually rent a private home so I'm not sure about the hotel situation, but we love the restaurants and shops!

Following on with the post above, from Avalon/Stone Harbor (two towns on the same island) you can easily reach OC just to the north or Cape May just to the south. Either would be about thirty minutes travel. You can also reach Atlantic City in about forty five minutes. If this interests you, consider The Golden Inn (with some ocean views) in Avalon or The Lark in Stone Harbor.

I think that the most charming place for New Years would be Cape May. There will be lots of places open. You can research them on Expedia, Priceline, or Travelocity. One of the well known inns there is the Mainstay. It is likely expensive but it is very well located so try to find someplace near it or just to the south of it.

We will be in Avalon. Happy New Year and 'Love Ya Lions'.

After staying at Congress Hall in Cape May Sunday night (12/9) I think it is exactly what you are looking for, if they aren't already sold-out.

Congress Hall is an historic hotel across the street from the beach. Most of the rooms have at least a partial ocean view and some have a balcony.

I'm sure they will have great New Year's Eve parties. The property includes a bar, a nightclub and a restaurant.

Just remember, it's an old building and it won't be cheap but what's cheap on New Year's Eve?
