New Hampshire June Long Weekend - Need Lodging Advice

Dear Helpful Fodorites - 50ish couple from Florida looking for a quiet mountain resort/condo/nice cabin location to chill for a long weekend in mid-June. We have surfed fodors and other websites until our fingertips are sore. Any advice will be appreciated. And, yes, we've read about floods and flies. Crossing our fingers that everything will be much better before we depart. BTW, we've already booked our flight to Manchester NH. If you've got another cool spot for us to explore, keep our starting point in mind, please.

I spent a long weekend in Squam Lake last summer and loved it. There is some hiking close by, and the area is gorgeous. I think it's about an hour and a half driving from Manchester. We stayed in a friend's house, but there are many small B&Bs and hotels in town. Good luck!

I wouldn't spend too much time in Manchester, an OK city but not a vacation destination. As you head north, things start improving. Just north of Concord is Canterbury Shaker Village, which is definitely worth stopping at. There are all kinds of accomodation options in the White mountains, from highway motels to cabins to luxury spots like the Mt. Wahington Hotel. I don't think you will have any problems due to our current floods, but all this rain will make for a wicked black fly season in June!

Please keep in mind that June 10-18th is Bike Week in Laconia (Weir's Beach) so be on the lookout and be careful of the Motorcycles out there! I'll be one of them.

Squam Lake is gorgeous!!! There's going to be a lot of traffic thru Meredith because of bike week. Motorcyle central is just south at Weirs Beach. The Inns at the Falls are beautiful and if you don't mind the extra traffic and hubbub, that would be a nice place to stay. Squam would be much quieter. We've stayed at the Grand View Hotel in Whitefield. A bit pricey but if you play golf you might like it. It's a little north of the mountains and in a quiet area. It's one of the renovated grand hotels. My husband didn't care for it but he prefers rustic cabins and doesn't play golf. You might do a search on Jackson and head there. It should be far enough north to escape bike traffic. If you aren't hiking, the black flies shouldn't be a problem.
