New Fodors Format

Anybody notice the new format of ads down the right-hand side of the page? Kinda of distracting to me. Also notice the new format has a lot of kinks -- getting several error messages in the text area.

I guess that's the price you pay for change. ((b))

It seems they're still playing with the new format trying to get the ads in the right spot. It's a pain. I don't understand why they don't have the same pages on a non-internet computer where they can play with the formatting and then only upload it when it's finalized. I'll live with the ads - it's the price for a free forum. But the method is bad! :)

I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!

I understand the need to post the ads, but PLEASE put them on TOP, not on the side!!!!!

FainaAgain Apr 26th, 2005 08:07 AM

Of course I'm getting errors, but this should be resolved soon.

The main RANT is: whenever I want to click on "jump to the last post" I have to do it very slow aiming well, or I'll click on expedia ad. This is frustrating. Awful. Hateful. Hurtful. Despeakable. Bad. Unacceptable.

Help me here, my supply of English words is coming to an end :)

another vote for ads on top instead of on the side! They are distracting, and cram the posts together even more - it makes them harder to read.

Hey, it's their site. They set the rules. You get it for free. Learn to live with their way....or leave!

Count me as a vote that real does hate the new format. Makes the color change issue seem minor in comparison.

Ever hear the saying... "beggars can't be choosers"? As your responses are all proving, this new format makes it harder to ignore the ads.

jlm_mi Apr 26th, 2005 08:46 AM

Perhaps beggars can't be choosers, but that says nothing about not being able to voice complaints.

And for me it's not the prominence of the ads. It's the fact that the post text is too close to the stuff just above it, and that the ad squishes the post text even narrower than it was before. There will be even more posts now that are too wide (due to long links) that will then require scrolling to read.

It's not enough, yet, to make me not want to use the resources. But it might make me not read threads that I otherwise would have read. Just because something's free doesn't mean I have to like every aspect about it.

And I would guess that fodors would like to make the readers as happy as possible (so that they'll visit more frequently and look at more ads) as long as it doesn't reduce their ad visibility.

Hearing from your customers is always a good thing, if done respectfully. Even if you don't act on the suggestions.

seetheworld Apr 26th, 2005 08:50 AM

geeesh, Howard. It's getting to be that you can't say anything on this board.

I guess I'll keep my complaint to myself.

NotMe Apr 26th, 2005 09:18 AM

I don't see any ads. I wonder if its because I use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser instead of Internet Explorer?

Scarlett Apr 26th, 2005 09:20 AM

Very annoying.
But Fodors has been weird all morning for me..getting strange pages in grey when I post, etc.
Just a FodorHickUp I think~I hope :)

jlm_mi Apr 26th, 2005 09:25 AM

Notme - I have the ad, and I am using Firefox. The ad is directly to the right of the text of a post.

HowardR Apr 26th, 2005 09:31 AM

seetheworld, I certainly agree with your right to complain. But, I just disagree with those who seemed to feel that the forum is a democracy!

NotMe Apr 26th, 2005 10:01 AM

Still don't see any ads, but maybe its one of my pop up blockers or anti-spyware programs that is keeping them from showing up.

unejam1 Apr 26th, 2005 10:09 AM

Wow...and I thought only children were spoiled. :)

sluggo Apr 26th, 2005 10:28 AM

I think the new, slim columns are much easier to skim, more like a newspaper.

jorr Apr 26th, 2005 10:40 AM

Oh Howard, before you get all pushy understand that it is us that give Fodors a high click rate which determines how much fodors can charge for banner ads. Without us there would be no profits on this forum and it wouldn't exist to make profits from.

buttercup Apr 26th, 2005 10:43 AM

No ads, here, either. But the text is narrower, and I agree with Sluggo, easier to read.

HowardR Apr 26th, 2005 11:12 AM

jorr, huh?
I look at it the other way......Without the ads, there's no forum!
