New England w/out kids Summer 2007
My husband and I will have a week between camp visitng days for a vacation. We will be starting in Wolfeboro, NH (where our son is at camp) and then heading to Marblehead, MA as a base for the rest of the week. I know it's a little out of the way, but the accomodations are free, and it's my hometown. We are looking for two things: nice but not over-the-top accomodations and activities in Wolfeboro and day trips to sometimes-overlooked places in the Boston area. Trying to conquer the Cape is NOT on our list... nothing against it, but it's just further than we want to drive.

We recently enjoyed the Chinese house at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. One of my all time favorite activities in Boston was a culinary tour of the North End with Michelle Topar. Great historical information, great food samples.
One of our favorite drives in the Lake Winnipesaukee area is the Squam Lake/ Center Sandwich area. Lunch or dinner at the Corner House Tavern. Find the Sandwich Creamery for locally made ice cream. You might even see a bear. The scenery is lovely. We keep reading about interesting things at the Remick Museum in Tamworth but haven't been there yet. There are different activities/demos throughout the year. Recently did ice cutting. We like the old Barnstormers Theater in Tamworth for summer theater. There is also summer theater at the high school in Meredith. When traveling from Wolfeboro to Marblehead you might take a roundabout route and visit Flag Hill Winery in Lee NH for a wine tasting. It wouldn't be too far out of your way or do a harbor cruise out of Portsmouth.
