New England with kids in August

We are planning on visiting Boston and the New England area in mid-August. We hope to go as far south as Newport, RI and as far north as Portland, Maine, including several days in Boston, Cape Cod, etc. We have 3 children ages 13,11 & 8. Any recommendations on places to stay/things to do? We have about 11 days all together.

Take a Duck Tour while in Boston, the kids will also enjoy the Museum of Science but bring ear plugs if you go to the laser show. They will also like Blue Man Group which is zany and fun. In the Portsmouth NH area there is a great Water Country which will provide a day of relaxing fun and the kids can work off all that energy. There is a marine biology center at Odiorne Point geared for their age group. In Ogunquit a walk along the Marginal Way is fun, it's along the cliff overlooking the beach. Have fun!

In the Newport area, go thru one or two of the grand houses, but don't miss the Green Animal Topiary gardens in nearby Portsmouth. I believe there is also a toy museum on the premises.

In Portland, take a harbor cruise to see lighthouses, lobster pots and harbor seals. Then stop by Beal's in the Old Port area for fantastic ice cream.
