New England weather in June
 

I may be travelling to Connecticut in June for work and am thinking about extending my trip to see some of New England - possibly having my husband fly out to meet me or meeting up with friends who live on the east coast. I was in Connecticut last month and made a side trip down to NJ to visit my friends - we went to NYC and Philly and had a great time. This time I am thinking of going north. My recent trip to Connecticut was my first to New England.

So, in deciding where to go, I thought I would get some input on the typical weather for the region in June. I checked Yahoo Weather so I have an idea of the temperatures, but what about the humidity? I know that the east coast can get pretty sticky in the summertime - does this decrease as you travel north?

somewhat - but it depends on how far north. For a real weather difference you usually have to go to Maine.

It really does depend. My parents live in NH on a lake, and it is never as humid there as it is in Washington, DC, where I live.

Also, June will be better than, say, August. June is a lovely time to be in Massachusetts, Vermont, NH, wherever. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Travel to where you want, the weather won't really be a factor.

In Northern New England (NH VT ME), June can range from the low 50's to mid 70's in June, with chilly nights. The big consideration is black flies. If you plan on doing any hiking, fishing, etc, in the woods of Northern New England, June is the peak of black fly season.

I was in DC for a few days several summers ago and it was quite sticky. I think the biggest problem though was that I was not prepared for the humidity so it took me by surprise.

So these black flies - do they bite or just fly around and annoy people?

Oh yes, those black flies bite! When we lived in upstate NY I remember the kids getting bit and the amount of blood...yuck.

As some one above said, the humidity can depend on where you are. I remember getting off the plane in Providence one July and it was hotter and more humid than what I had left in Miami, but by the time I got down to Newport (on the coast) it was merely pleasantly warm. Also, the later you go in June the greater the chance of encountering uncomfortably humid weather, but if you stick mostly to the coasts you should be fine (at least in southern New England; I have no experience with northern New England during June).

Blackfiles are the bane of the northwoods. They are little biting gnats that will swarm around your head and bite your ears, eyelids,neck, etc, and actually cause blood to run. They are found in woodsy rural areas from May to early July. On breezy days they are less of a problem, and are not found near the seacoast.

June in NE is probably the best month of the year (along with Sept/Oct), unless of course you are an ice fisher.

Don't listed to all the muck about the black flies. There are great sites to see in Mystic, CT, Newport and Providence RI, anywhere along Cape Cod, etc. where you will never encounter a black fly.

I've been in Charlotte for 8 years after living in southern CT my whole life. How about Boston? One of the truly great cites in America.

YOu should have days in the mid-70's and evenings a bit cooler but this is great weather - kind of spring-like but almost summer.

Sounds like coastal NE will be the place to go. I was definitely thinking of going to Boston. I visited Mystic on the last trip and would like to go back - it was evenning when I was there, so I only had a little bit of time and a lot of things were closing up.

If this trip materializes, I will definitely post for some more advice.

You wn't have problems with black fly in Boston or hte immediate surrounding area. But in early June, you might have a problem getting a hotel room because of graduations. It won't be as bad as usual this year, because MIT is having theirs in the first week of June but Harvard's is the second week; usually, they're both the first week in June and every hotel room within 20 miles is taken. But do book early, anyway.
