New England Vacation
 

I was planning a trip through New England next year by car and had a few questions..I don't want to make reservations because I just want to drive at leisure and stay where ever my heart desires.Was thinking about late May early June and was wondering if it would be a problem getting a place to stay without reservations at that time of year? Also what kind of weather can I expect? I'll be leaving from WI and driving up the east coast through Ccanada and back down to WI. Any information or things to see or do would be appreciated....Thank YOu.....

Weather in New England varies more than you would think - in the mountains of northern vermost, for instance, it can even snow a little at that time of year. Since you are coming from WI, thru Canada - the weather will be similar to that part of the trip - although a little warmer in more southern NE, obviously. Boston area at that time of year is around 70 degrees, breezy, and you can still get some spring rains.

Boston area is the one part of NE that I think you might have a tough time without reservations - don't know if that is included on your trip.

Also, that time of year is black fly season in much of New England - nasty and annoying bugs that seem to bother some more than others.

Don't know how long you plan for the trip - are you including Canadian Maritime provinces - if so, you might take ferry from Nova Scotia to Bar Harbor Maine and then head south at your leisure.

Late May early June is graduation time for all the colleges in Boston..better check it out now.

It depends on where you are interested in going. The mountains can be pleasant by early June, but as someone above mentioned, you will run into blackflies, which can make any kind of hiking difficult. The seacoast will also be warming up by this time, but the water will still be much too cold for swimming. There can also be lots of fog along the coast due to warming air temps hitting the cold water. This is not a particularly busy time in New England, I would think you could wing it, except for possibly Boston. I would highly reccommend Montreal as another city to explore.

I think the time of year you have chosen is perfect. I would suggest that you spend around 2 days in Boston, then head to Rhode Island for a couple of days -- Newport is a must and Providence is worth spending some time in (especially dinner on Federal Hill). If you stick around the coast you won't have to worry about the blackflies others have mentioned. However, if you to deviate from the coast, try Mount Washington in New Hampshire or the Berkshires.
