New England in Fall

My husband and I are flying into Providence in October for a first time visit.
Hoping to enjoy quaint inns or B/B, fall foliage, and everything the area has to offer. Realize need to make reservations ASAP. Any suggestions for itinerary/accomodations would be greatly appreciated. We are active seniors who would appreciate a romantic inn.

My husband and I love the Reluctant Panther, Manchester Vermont. It's in a quaint town full of great art galleries and all kinds of shopping (lots of upscale outlet stores). The dining is superb. The Black Swan is one of the best. The rooms in The Panther are romantic and beautiful. Most suites have 2 fireplaces, 1 in bedroom 1 in bathroom. Gourmet breakfast is served in the dining room. We love it and go every year! Check it out at:
www.reluctantpanther.com

When in October? The foliage moves quickly. Best destination will depend upon your dates.

October 12-19.

Oct 12-19 is at the end of the foliage season! Most places have hit peak by Columbus Day weekend. If you can't travel the week before, there should still be lots of color in the Southern Berkshires of MA and in Connecticut and Rhode Island, although it's chancy. You never know when fall might be a bit "late" or last unusually longer. There are loads of romantic inns. Do web searches for country inns in New England and state by state. Or have a look at some of the many country inn guides in the New England section of your local bookstore. Also, see www.newngland.com

This weekend I read a very interesting article in the Sun Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale newspaper) about a train which runs from Boston, MA (out of North Station) up thru NH into Portland, Maine. Trip takes 3 hours and sounds like a GREAT way to experience the fall foliage. You could stay overnight in Portland and then take the train back down the next morning. Has anyone been on "The Down Easter"?

http://www.thedowneaster.com/
