New England Coast

We're planning a July trip where we fly into D.C. and fly out 9 days later from NYC. We'ld like to try & visit Boston, Providence, and perhaps somewhere in Vermont in that time--staying for about 2 days in each area. Does anyone have any suggestions for a trip starting in D.C. & ending in NYC? Your help would be greatly appreciated as I've never been North-East before (from Milwaukee)!

I'm confused. You're going to fly into DC, head to New England and then back to NY?

You have way too much planned for just 9 days. There is more than enough to see in NYC and DC for 9 days. If you want to visit New England, I'd suggest just 1 stop. Newport RI would be a good choice, as it's only about 3 hours from NYC.

Providence is not a great travel destination. Are you driving? Otherwise, take a train to Boston, rent a car after you stay and visit Maine Coast(York, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Wells or Cape Anne (Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, Ipswich? or Cape Cod, return rental car in Boston and take train to Manhattan.

I agree with taking a train to Boston and renting a car to go to Southern Maine around York. I'd then take a sunny day to drive over to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I'd STRONGLY recommend Franconia Notch State Park for a visit to the Flume.

I live in Vermont, but I think Maine and the White Mountains will give you what you are looking for.

Thanks so much for your replies. Flights are really cheap into & out of D.C. or NYC, that's why we're trying to start and end in those 2 cities. The train advice is great-we'll look into that! I'm thinking you're right, we might be trying to fit in a little too much in one trip...

I agree that Providence is not worth a stop for your first time to the NE (no offense to Providence!). I'm guessing your plan is to hit DC for a few days, then go up to Boston, then down to NYC? Have you looked into taking a US Airways shuttle from DC to Boston? http://www.usairways.com/awa/content...o.aspx#weekday. They are not that expensive and it is a quick trip. The shuttles run every hour during the weekdays and every other hour during the weeekends. You don't give yourselves that much time to visit each city, so this might be a good option to get from DC to Boston - driving would take hours, as would a train. What you would spend on shuttle tickets would probably be comparable to what you would spend for a train or renting a car and gas. Not to mention the hours of travel time you would save.

I would highly recommend taking a train from Boston's South Station to NYC Penn Station though. The Acela is around $100 one way and it is a great trip down southern coastal Connecticut.

As wyatt9 says, you could easily split 9 days between DC and NYC alone, but if you want to hit Boston as well, I would just spend your time in Boston and not venture out of the city. There is so much to see and do in each place. You should schedule a separate trip back to New England during the fall season, when the weather is cooler and the foliage is beautiful. I think this is the best time to experience quintessential NE - coastal Maine, White Mtns of NH and Green Mtns of Vermont!
