Before you buy maps, go to www.maps.google.com or www.mapquest.com and put in your starting point and then the first destination you are interested in. Then use the add a destination to put in subsequent destinations. You can zoom in and out to see the areas in detail or with respect to other locations.

Once you have done that, consider what you want for detailed paper maps. There are many map books available here at most bookstores, Wallmarts, convenience stores, and many gas stations. Most have state maps with detailed maps of cities and are usually less than $15.

Then come back and ask about local driving conditions as sometimes a 20 mile trip can take an hour more than you plan depending on time of day/year etc.

Your itinerary is not only not reasonable/logical but also too late in the season for part of it. You have about a week in NYC which is good. For this trip, at that time of year, I'd skip the whole Canada/Niagra Falls portion. That way you could do one week in New England - Boston, Cape Cod, Cape Ann, Maine as far as about Camden. You'll get the flavor and most of the scenery. There will be some foliage left along the coast, none at all in Northern New England or Canada. After a week or a little less in New England I'd go down to Washington for two or three days with another day in Williamsburg. Temps will be warmer south of New York than north, but foliage is not as dramatic. I wouldn't add any additional destinations.
