New Bern
We're thinking about leaving our home State of Maine and heading South. Probably the folks in the South are pretty darned tired of us Northerners moving into their cities and towns. You must realize that where you live must be pretty special. Please rest assured that we are not the kind of people who have any interest in changing your way of life in any way whatsoever.
Well, you're probably all wondering where us Northerners are thinking about moving.
Is there anyone out there who would be willing to give us an opinion on New Bern, North Carolina. Cost of living, Employment opportunities, Health care, Housing, and anything else you would be willing to share.
Thank you!

By the grace of God I was born a Tar Heel and I do realize I have a good thing here so I never moved. Yes, we do get tired of "well, we did it like ____ back there." If you are going to be like that, you're not going to be welcomed anywhere. To take from Lewis Grizzard: I-85 does go NORTH too.
New Bern should be affordable, but jobwise I don't know. I live in the triangle area and yes we have jobs, but it is rather expensive and the traffic is bad. (Not LA or DC bad, but bad). Heathcare and education are top in the nation in the triangle, so everything else looks low to me. If you are very ill in New Bern the hospital there might transfer you to Greenville (ECU Medical Center), Duke or Chapel Hill.
There is someone else on the board, I think she is named Betty, who lives in New Bern and has positive things to say about it. Do a search for New Bern and you should find that topic.
My concerns about New Bern are hurricanes/flooding, and lack of stuff to do besides golf. You should check out any and all sources about relocation (not just retirement relocation). Get info from New Bern/Craven County Tourism board about the area.
And visit for an extended period before packing up everything and selling your home. Try to stay for at least a month at a time during different seasons. Come visit for the July 4th holiday and see if you can handle the humidity (it can be brutal).
By the way how did you decide on New Bern?

My mother and father retired to New Bern in 1992 from Long Island. I was a resident with them for 4 months in 1993, otherwise a very frequent guest. It's a lovely, small town. You don't state your age, but there is a growing (and already palpable) retiree community there. My mother, age 57, insisted she stay there after my father passed away because of all the wonderful friendships she has made with fellow retirees and locals alike. I have no worries at all about her being "alone". Cost of living is low, though housing can be pricey depending upon what part of town you seek - the market is rather slow currently, however. It is about a 40 minute drive to Atlantic Beach and area, 2.5 or so to Raleigh. USAir services New Bern airport - connecting through Charlotte. Definitely worth a scouting trip, in my opinion. It is life in a bit slower lane and if that appeals to you then New Bern's a good choice.

About four years agao a company based in the community where I lived at the time (my hometown Syracuse NY) moved their entire operation to New Bern, inlcuding a majority of the employees. I can't give you a specific reference there but it may be worth calling to see if someone on their staff can chat with you for a few minutes and offer a perspective. Company name is Wheatstone Electronics. Good luck in your quest.
