Hi: We're 'retrieving' our granddaughter from Augusta, Georgia during the last week of June. En route, my husband and I hope to drive from Connecticut to somewhere on the Outer Banks to stay for 3-4 nights before continuing on to Augusta for a few days before returning to CT. (via NYC for 2 nights). Where should my husband and I stay for our visit to the Outer Banks? Neither of us has been to that area and we'll both need a few days to decompress after a busy school year. All suggestions are welcome as are recommendations for guidebooks of this area. Thanks in advance! ~ Bow.

okracoke island was the best vacation ive ever been on. very private it seels like your the only people there. has miles and miles of one of the best beaches in the world. it was voted americas top beach in 2009. definitly no better place to stay

Thank-you! Where'd you stay on Okracoke? We won't be there long enough to rent a house and it'll just be the two of us for a few nights so a hotel will work better for us.

I don't know a thing about this area so exploring the options should be fun.

I should have said that we want to be oceanfront. My husband wants to be within walking distance of restaurants; the less driving the better while we're there.

There are several inns on the island, which is accessible only by ferry. You'll need to book soon, since summer+beach=people. You can make ferry reservations here:

I really am hoping for a balcony overlooking a panoramic ocean view, a walk to diverse restaurants, etc.

I think I want to be somewhere between quaint and cozy and family oriented tourist trap!

Is there a resort overlooking the ocean that's a bit upscale and 'adult' in its atmosphere? Doesn't have to be on Ocracoke.

but there are other inns in the area with that same

Thanks so much. I was hoping to find a hotel similar to those on the beach at Hilton Head (marriott, hilton, westin), but now I'm thinking they don't exist on the Outer Banks. Sounds like the Outer Banks have a much quieter vibe than I assumed. I'll adjust my thinking and take a look around at these suggestions.

We just returned from the OBX yesterday. We stayed 2 nights at the Surfside in Nag's Head. It was a small hotel with a beautiful, wide, clean beach. We had the best room --315. We had a balcony with a full view of the ocean, and a second balcony with a view down the beach. Our room had a couch, chair, fridge and microvwave. It was within walking distance of several good restaurants. The best part was that it was very inexpensive this time of the year. I would highly recommend it.

We also stayed 2 nights in Buxton at the Inn at Pimlico Sound. It was more of a bed a breakfast. There were less than a dozen rooms. We had a fabulous view of the Pimlico Sound. The room was a little jaded and didn't look nearly as fresh as the online photos. But, it was still very nice,albeit expensive. I don't know if we would return for that reason.

Hope this helps. We had a wonderful time!! There are also nice B and B's in Manteo on Roanoke Island, which is charming.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. We've decided to fly our granddaughter direct, non-stop, from Atlanta to Boston. The downside is the same as the 'upside': No roadtrip for us this time.
