Netcong
In December, I will be visiting elderly family members who live in Netcong, NJ. I will be there for 1 week - I live in Florida. I'm 40 years old - any recommendations for sightseeing in the area (day and night). Also, any good restaurants?

Wow, never thought I would see Netcong on a thread on this travel site. That being said, I can recommend a very good restaurant in nearby Wharton called "The Harlequin."<BR><BR>As far as sightseeing goes, there is Morristown. Washington's Headquarters and other historic sites and some good restaurants. Most of the places that come to mind are good for warmer weather type trips. I shall think a bit longer and see what I can come up with.

Since you are there for an entire week.... if it wouldn't be considered impolite to your relatives, you might consider taking a day and evening in NYC. The NJ Transit Boonton line train will get you to NYC in about 90 minutes total elapsed time (approx). It goes into Hoboken and from there it's a short ferry ride or PATH train to NYC (the 90 minutes includes the final leg of the trip). So much to do in NY that it's hard to know where to start but this forum has loads of ideas in the archives. If you're a hiker the Delaware Water Gap is close by and has good hiking trails. You might also consider a day trip to Lambertville NJ / New Hope PA. Quaint little towns on opposite banks of the river - lots of antique shops and little cafes - not a bad place to spend a relaxed day.

Hey People,<BR>What's that historic village out Rt. 80, somewhere before the PA line??? Think it starts w/an 'S"? Sorry, I haven't lived up there in 15yrs. I'm really reaching into the recesses of my mind but am sure there is some place like that--did a school field trip there way back when! Not sure it's even open at that time of year, but thought I'd throw it out there.<BR>Debbie<BR><BR>How long a trek to West Point?<BR>I definately think a visit to NYC is in order. Netcong's boooring! How long could it take to drive around Lake Hopatcong in the winter?? If you get board, I could recommend some malls....

Good idea Owen. I was thinking about that after I responded and realized that there are even busses from Netcong (or Hopatcong)--Lakeland Bus Lines.<BR><BR>You could also head West, the Poconos are very pretty and only about a half hour away.<BR>

I am fascinated with the idea of the Netcong area as a destination. <BR><BR>Debbie: Are you thinking of Waterloo Village? Just racked me own brain to come up with that one! Might be ok but the weather might make it less appealing. Coming from FL and all.

Some more sites include: Vernon Valley/Great Gorge, Picatinny Arsenal, "Smiles" at the Ledgewood Circle, Lake Mohawk, Meadowlands to see the Giants/Jets/Nets/Horses/ Devils, etc. Have Fun !!!
