need weekend getaway ideas

we are leaving from houston, want to stay within 4 hours or so. We prefer unique places, but will take all suggestions! It is for our 1 year anniversary.
thanks

4 hrs by car is different than 4 hours by plane...

How about Natchitoches? Beautiful B & B's. Would be a great, romantic location for a first anniversary.

Here's another thread that may help:

Fredricksburg/ Johnson City area I think is within 4 hours of you...

I can vouch for Fredericksburg.....wonderful B&B's, and lots of hotels. Unique shopping along Main St. If you are over 21, do go to the wineries along Main St. We have wonderful wines here in Texas, and you'll get to sample lots of 'em.

I am really interested in this place but I have not been. It really looks nice, quiet and lots of fun for an anniversary or b/d. It's 283 miles from Houston or about 4 hours.

If you have never been I would return to San Antonio in a heart beat. I really enjoyed the Hotel La Mansion Del Rio.

And the old market was interesting along with the food which was outstanding. It's a little closer to Houston but you may have been to SA.

It's 316 miles to Natchez, MS but I live in MS and it's one of my favorite spots. Stay at one of the more modern rooms in the back and have dinner there as well as visit Stanton Hall and have lunch at Carriage House and dinner @ The Castle Restaurant at Dunleith Plantaion. Have you been to New Orleans. They would love to have your tourist money there. Have fun.

Another vote for Fredricksburg. The hill country is beautiful. Quaint old town. Easy side trips to Enchanted Rock and Perdnallas Falls. All beautiful. We stayed in a cute B&B for our Anniversary weekend. Had a great time.
Happy Anniversary!

Gruene is a great little town. We stayed at the Gruene Apple, and it's a wonderful bed and breakfast. There's a neat restaurant called the Grist Mill that's built in an old mill; they have delicious homemade wine coolers and good food. You can sit outside right by the river, and sometimes they have live music. The town is full of great little antique shops as well.

It's very close to New Braunfels. We love it there.

How about Destin, Florida?
