Need to know about Hotel San Carlos in Phoenix

I might stay there for a conference. I have read mixed reviews. Anyone with personal experience?

Thanks!

Probably the oldest hotel operating in downtown Phoenix. I think it opened in 1927.

If your conference is at the San Carlos, I would certainly stay there. It is our oldest hotel, refurbished, since I am a local I have not stayed there, but it looks terrific, good location for many restaurants, theaters, sporting events...I wouldn't think there would be a problem.

The rooms are a lot smaller than a modern hotel. It has charm - and a reputation for ghosts! A ghost tour has it on its stop - the claim to fame being the indian well used for the water under the hotel itself (sacred of course), the school that operated here, and the stars of yesteryear that have stayed here when Phoenix was a real western town. Parking is terrible though - and downtown Phoenix can be scary at night if you're wandering. All in all the San Carlos is clean, full of character, has a cool antique elevator, and is walking distance to several interesting sites and restaurants. Oh - it is getting chilly in the evenings here - finally! Bring a jacket for late night.
