Our family is skiing in Tahoe next week for the first time. I'd appreciate restaurant suggstions; both family and fine dning. We'll be staying in Truckee and would like to dine primaily in North Lake Tahoe. Thank you for any help.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be a tremendous amount of help but I think you will not have any trouble finding a variety of restaurants in/and around Truckee. We recently got back from a week at Northstar, however, we had a condo and ate in every evening (slopes during the day). We really enjoyed our trip and hope you do to!

We go to Truckee just to pick up breads and other treats at Earthly delights. The baked goods there are to die for!

A favorite of ours in Truckee is Cottonwood. It is on a little hill just above the town, on the south side. As you approach it, it looks like an old run down motel, but the rustic interior is very nice and the service and food are wonderful. On the main street, many of the restaurants seem to change names and ownership every time we go, and I have lost track of the name of a nice Italian one right in the middle of the busiest block of shopping. It has a sort of loft above the main dining room and the interior is primarily brick. It was still great this past Christmas. Down on the lake, Petite Pier is the best of the best, but take your major credit card, it is quite pricey (but worth it in my opinion for their very fine French food). The big lodgey dining room at the Hyatt at Incline is really wonderful as well. And we can't miss a stop at Garwoods on the northwest portion of the lake. It is especially nice for brunch and imbibing their "wet woodys", but I guess you'd have to give up a day of skiing to do a brunch. The nicest dining room at Northstar is really quite good and a surprising "bargain" in my opinion, especially for a ski resort.
If you want to make the trip over to Squaw Valley, there is an outpost of the wonderful Plumpjack from San Francisco. I haven't eaten there but if it is only half as good as their San Francisco one it would still be wonderful.

I agree with Patrick. Our favorite place is the Lone Eagle at the Hyatt resort.

Thanks, Maureen, I was straining my brain but couldn't remember the name of the restaurant at the Hyatt. I was treated to a wonderful birthday dinner there two years ago.

I second the endorsement of the unnamed italian restaurant in the middle of the main block in Truckee. It was great - but sorry, I can't remember its name either! We love Wolfdales in Tahoe City for a special treat. On the pricey side, but exquisite food, continential/French with an Asian influence. They always have a wild game on the menu with some inspired sauce. Love it there!

I emailed my partner's sister-in-law in Northstar. The name of the Italian restaurant in Truckee is Pianetto's (neither of us are sure if it has one or two t's, however). They ate there again just a couple of weeks ago and said it's as good as ever. Nice staff there too, a cut above the usual seasonal working crowd in many of the restaurants.
