Need some shade in Key West

This is probably a strange request but I need some ideas for places to visit/tour in Key West that have some shaded areas. My husband and I are going to Key West because it is a place that I have always wanted to visit. My husband is not crazy about the beach as he can't not be in the sun for very long or he will get a heat/sun rash that makes him miserable. So I would like some suggestions for places that are indoor that we can visit, or places with shaded areas such as umbrellas or trees. We will be there in early November for 3 nights. We are staying at Avalon Bed and Breakfast. Would also like some suggestions for stops along the way from Miami as we are flying into Miami and driving to KW in the same day so we would like to stop a couple of times to enjoy the Keys. Thanks!

Most of the fun in Key West starts at sunset so you can easily stay in the shade... Grab a late breakfast, hang in the shade by the pool and head out in late afternoon... There is a shaded side of Duval street as you visit the galleries, tacky shirt shops, and street vendors... Then head to the Sunset Celebration at the end of Duval for the quirky performers and more people watching...

The sunset sail can be fun if you enjoy a boat ride and a few cocktails and your sun exposure is limited...

There are some attractions and museums as well as the Conch trolley tour and Hemingway house that you can also enjoy in the daytime that limit your sun exposure... And if you are party people, there is plenty of shade inside the bars! All day long..... Have fun

Gary has given you excellent information. Key West is not known for it's beaches so you're in luck there! :-) The drive down to KW is beautiful, lots of places to stop I have listed two that we really liked:

November weather is nice and not humid normally. Visit The Hemingway house, Green Parrot, many of the bars have umbrellas, sit at the marina and enjoy happy hour at Alonzos,

Lots of the best places in KW are on shady streets, from the fantastic cottages and art cars to the Truman White House.

When we were in Key West a few years ago, we asked a local for a recommendation for something different. They suggested the Secret Garden. It was in a very shaded area and there were bird cages with parrots throughout the walk. It would be nice for a picnic. http://www.nancyforrester.com/garden.html
