Need restaurant recommendation for Union Square
I will be treating my DD to shopping and dinner in and around Union Square on a Saturday in June. I'd like your help in selecting the restaurant.
We would like fish, but not sushi. Entrees less than $35 would be nice. Thanks! |
Union Square where? NYC? San Francisco? Somerville, Mass?
|
Sorry-- San Francisco, CA!
|
Tadich Grill..couple of city blocks down from Union Square.
|
Tadich is more than just a couple of blocks away - more like 9 blocks. I would recommend Sams - but it is closed on Saturdays.
Farallon is more upscale and closer. Great for a mother & daughter after-shopping evening. Ask for their best table (I forgot what the "best" room is called). www.farallonrestaurant.com Stu Dudley |
Thanks, Stu! I was hoping you would respond, oh, Great Poobah of S.F. information. LOL
I'll check it out. |
I've walked from my hotel, the St. Francis in Union Square to Tadich Grill..it took about 10 minutes max.
Good luck on getting a table on a Saturday night in June at Farallon...and asking for their best table..LOL I've known Pat Kuleto for years and I don't even get the best seat! Maybe the bar menu for happy hour in the Jellyfish lounge. |
Allegro Romani
Yank Sing (dim sum) not quite Union Sq Cafe de la Presse Al Fornaio (west of embarcadeo ...not quite Union Sq) Michael Mino the St Francis |
pls forgive all typos in previous post...you get the idea
|
I did reserve the Farallon for our Saturday at 7. It was wide open.
More ideas? I am a bit unsure of the decorating at Farallon. On the web the pics are hard to make out. |
Farallon's was my first thought. Some days you can just walk in and park yourself in the first room where the bar is - could be there a long time though to wait for an open table.
How about Scala's Bistro? Belden Lane's Plouf, B44, etc. are a bit on the expensive side. |
I just checked Farallon on Opentable for June 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. The 19th is a Saturday. All times are completely "open" and available for reservations from 6:30 through 7:30 (didn't look for times after 7:39).

Farallon wide open a on a Saturday night in June at 7pm...Wow!
The design is a classic Kuleto. |
The decor (upscale ocean features)& the food is excellent. Lucky girl.
|
Yes, Stu is right. There is no problem, ksucat, this far in advance for a table in June at Farallon. Based on the many positive comments here, that's probably where we will keep our resie.
I looked at Scala's, too, because I like the classic old hotels and their restaurants. Is that better than Farallon? You fodorites always come through. Thanks! |
LOL..I know PeaceOut..I've dined there for many years.
It 'was' always a hard reservation to get. It's an excellent place to dine..I love the oyster bar and lounge. You'll have a good time with your DD. |
I'm not a fan of Scala's Bistro - we've dined there twice. I think you will enjoy Farallon more - we did. it is a "feast for the eyes". I think the best tables are in the old pool area undernieth the jellyfish.

if you prefer fish Farallon will be your best bet.
I do LOVE scala's tho - excellent italian food and a bit more of a mix of "buzz" and old fashioned good service. |
We loved Farallon's. Dined there a couple years ago. Made reservations about a week before our Saturday night. Restaurant was full when we got there.

Well, I don't know if I've ever seen such unanimous agreement on a restaurant!
I also like their "Six Until Seven" Happy Hour, which is from 4:30 till 7:00 p.m., even on Saturdays. They serve "six fancy snacks and six refreshing drinks" for $6 each. Here's a sample of the menu: TRUFFLED POMMES FRITES WARM SPRING VEGETABLES CORNMEAL CRUSTED FRIED OYSTERS (2) Dungeness crab cakes (2) house made gnocchi wild mushroom fondue Today’s soup Cabrito Blanco Margarita Farallon Jack Rose Amstel Light Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Mencía, Ladairo, Monterrei, Spain 2007 Muscadet, Domaine de la Tourmaline, Loire Valley 2007 Available before 7pm in the Jellyfish Lounge and Oyster bar http://www.farallonrestaurant.com/gr...er_6until7.jpg We have resies at 7:00, so maybe we will get there at 6 and enjoy appetizers in their lounge or bar. Sounds perfect! Thank you! |
