Need recommendations for teen girls shopping trip in New York in 2009
I know that there are already a lot of threads asking for shopping recommdations in Manhattan, but in this economy, I know that some stores are gone (for example, the Times Square Virgin Megastore). My daughters (16 and 13) and I will be shopping in NYC early next month. What are some great trendy/inexpensive stores? What are the best neighborhoods for that type of store? (NOT high end designer, but more unique than Macy's or Bloomingdales, for example). Looking for clothes and accessories. Thanks.

Union Square has DSW for shoes, Filene's for clothes and shoes in the same building and there's a Virgin megastore on the same block along with lots of street tables around Union Square Park for jewelry etc.
Fifth ave. from ~ 14 st- 23 st. has a lot of younger stores, most of which are currently having sales which should continue.

But Filene's Basement is in Ch. 11 and some stores are being purchased by Men's Wearhouse; I believe that all of the Virgin Megastores in the US have closed. That's why I'm asking for up to the minute info and don't want to rely on old threads...because this last 9 months has been brutal on retailers!

For the moment, the fact that Men's Wearhouse has purchased Filene's will have no effect on operations (of those sites that will remain in business at all -- some will go out of business, but the others are not necessarily being converted to another use).
I thought the same thing about Virgin Megastore, but their website is down (maybe that's why LOL)

I just hosted my 16 and 18 year-old nieces for a weekend shopping trip to NYC and they had a BLAST. Some of their favorite spots were Wet Seal and Forever 21 (and everything in between) on 14th street near Broadway. They found the best bargains when we ventured to Fulton Street Mall (really just a few blocks of stores closed off to traffic, not a shopping center) in downtown Brooklyn. There is a Macys there (the girls declared the sale rack to be way better there and with deeper discounts than in Manhattan) and all around are urban teen clothing stores with all the trends and brand-names "the kids" seem to be into.
A great way to experience an area other than Manhattan, and only 2 subway stops from Century 21 area. We ended our day on Smith Street at a super affordable jewelry & accessory store at the corner of Bergen, had lunch at a cute French bistro across the street (Tabac) and got on the F-train 1 block away to get back into the city.
We also lucked on to a street fair where they found a few interesting items. You might be able to find one that will be on when you're here (http://www.clearviewfestival.com) on the left-hand side of the page.

Actually, no, that's still in Manhattan.
Almost all trains have a stop that can get you to Fulton St Mall in Brooklyn, though. We took the F to Jay Street/Borough Hall. The A and C trains also stop at that same station.

Yes, the trian stop called Fulton Street is in Manhattan not Brooklyn. To get to Fulton Street Mall in Brooklyn, take the A, C, or F to Jay Street Borough Hall. That will leave you at the start of Fulton Street Mall and about 2 blocks from Macys.

are the woodbury outlets worth visiting?
or are there any other outlets nearby? what about a Target store - i heard that target in the states is so good compared to ours...i heard there is one in brooklyn now

We were just there with my two teenage daughters and SoHo was their favorite shopping spot. You can just go from store to store on Broadway - many of the big names - and there are little boutiques on some of the side streets. They had a blast.

what about Berdof Goodman .(...dont even know if thats the right name...)
is that worth checking out - is it grand - an old building?
large dept stores bore me - but if the building is beautiful Im keen to see - i love smaller unique boutiques, would the village be the best place for shops like that?
Also
does are there hairdresser salons all over the place - I need to get my weekly blow out haha
if I have well groomed hair Im one happy gal!
