I think the best place to stay in Honolulu, (Oahu) is the Hilton Hawaiian timeshare aprtments. It is right next door to the Hawaiian Hilton Hotel(access to the hotel brunch, hawaiian show, beach pools.) But has it's own concierge and is more of an apartment w/full kitchen.

VBRO.com usually has a good listing...be sure to get the ocean side so you can sit on the lanai for sunsets and cocktails.

It was just called the Princeville Hotel and was part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood. Way back, it a was a Sheraton.

The Moana Surfrider on Waikiki has a newer tower whose rooms are quite adequate - not small.
The St. Regis is a huge, very expensive hotel, where you not only need to pay the nightly charge but also, unless you drive somewhere for every meal, have to pay very high prices for food! We had lunch there recently for $60. - two sandwiches and drinks. I do not like staying where the prices are outrageous unless I can easily go elsewhere for other meals. Getting your car out from a valet to go to the few good restaurants on the north shore is not something I would want to do.
Poipu is not cheap, either, but at least it offers more variety. We had an outstanding but expensive meal at Koa Kea's Red Salt as a treat and then went elsewhere for other meals, which usually meant walking or taking a short ride. You can't do that at the St. Regis. Leaving the property alone takes about 10 minutes by the time you get your car and drive out to the main road.
