Need Luggage Advice
 

We're not big believers in expensive luggage. With that knowledge, what should we be concerned about -- what is the strongest material in a lightweight bag? Are there other features we should pay close attention to? Brands we should avoid? We need a couple of larger suitcases as our last ones (10-year old Skyway) are on their last legs. Usually, we only use the big suitcases once a year -- most often we travel with 22" carryons.

Personally, I go for cheap, lightweight, and fewest compartments. In that order.

i would never buy black luggage again...too many people have that color.

I pay attention to the wheels, how the handle pops up, and the weight of the suitcase empty. I paid ~$50 for one 22" and one 24" years ago (use one of the other, not both). They're fine.

Oh, and I bought a really nice burgundry colored 29" for my sister for Christmas last year (she needed the big size for specific reasons) at TJ Maxx for under $100. It was not a brand name I recongnized but it handled the best, as I wheeled it around the store :-)

Also I don't like a bunch of compartments, pockets, etc. The more streamlined the better it works for me.

I don't buy expensive luggage either. This is what I look for in "checked luggage" size (24" and bigger):

1. large sturdy wheels with good solid attachment to the case (no dinky little wheels screwed on to the bottom of the bag).

2. solid handle that doesn't wobble or bend when extended.

3. unusual color or patterned fabric - easier to find on the carousel.

4. Two outside pockets - one for my second pair of shoes (so I don't have to put them in with my clothing) and a smaller one at the top for things I want right away at my destination but don't need to carry on (i.e., road maps, umbrella, etc.)

Then I do as Suze mentioned, I drag it around with me at the store to see how it handles.

Which is why I would never buy suitcases via mail order or over the internet

Personally, I DO buy luggage over the internet but I always buy the same brand and I already know the quality and how it handles.

I fly a lot and always go back to Kipling. I try other stuff periodically and kick myself for straying. I keep going back to my 12 year old 21" carry on that looks great.

We've been happy with the Rick Steves luggage - durable, lightweight, and available in a variety of colors. Good value. And yes, we bought it over the internet.
