P.S. If you guys know of any fun weekend festivals in New England this summer, PLEASE post them here!
Last year, we were able to make it to Salem Maritime Festival and the Gloucester Schooner Festival. We'd love to go to more, esp if they are FOOD-related.

Thanks for the list, RLFox184! We definitely need to get ourselves to the Mondadnock area; probably more than once this summer. It sounds like a really lovely region with plenty to do/explore. I don't think we've ever been there (shame on us)!

Hey all, quick report back:
It turned out to be a really beautiful day in the N Shore. We had a fabulous time in Rockport - gosh, I had forgotten how quaint it is as a coastal town. We were there for 3 hrs (inclu lunch), then went to Halibut Point state Park. THANK YOU to those of you who suggested this. It's so beautiful there, esp the quarry pond. DH had a smile on his face all day, as he loves the smell of the ocean, the sea breeze, and the sound of the breaking waves.

Glad you had a great day. I was away last week so I missed your original post. Agree with suggestion to visit Peterborough and surrounding towns. You could go to Pickety Place in Mason for an herbal luncheon. One year we did a garden tour of the area. It was amazing. Garden tours are a great way to visit an area.
Slightly longer than 90 minutes for you might be Musterfield Farm's Old Time Farming days in N Sutton NH. Usually held the weekend before Labor Day. Instead of going Rt 89 you could go Pleasant St/Rt 103 from Concord to Warner and then back roads to N Sutton. Either visit Mt Kearsarge from Warner side or Wilmot side. Wilmot side was a terrific small park and views to the north. There's Kearsarge Indian Museum. New London is a lovely college town.
The League of NH Arts and Crafts Festival in Sunapee in early August is one of the best in the country.
Open Studio Day by League in early November.
Canterbury NH Shaker Village has several events during the summer.
I know I'm forgetting a lot of ideas but it was a long trip home yesterday. South Station to Concord NH is 1 hr 15 minutes so further north than Mondanock or Portsmouth area might be too far.

So glad you enjoyed the day trip. For things to do and special events in Connecticut, go to www.ctvisit.com and click on events and then on the month you are interested in. There are tons of things that come up on the site.

If it's a gray day, you can always check out the Glass Flowers at the Harvard Museum of Natural History ...amazing in any weather to see those amazingly realistic handcrafted models of thousands of flowering plants, as well as the new exhibits, Language of Color and Headgear. Another favorite, after bird walks in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, is to go kayaking on the Charles River.
