How about The Cloister on Sea Island?
If you can't justify this how about something on St. Simons Island?
Another idea, and it is not far from you is Big Canoe. I just went there with my college buddies and it was wonderful. My friend and her husband went there for Valentine's and really loved it also.

The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.
It is only a couple of hours from Atlanta.

Samsaf--I cut and pasted my friend's answer to my email about the cabin rental below. I was mistaken; it isn't in Blue Ridge but Ellijay. Sorry!
Deb--It was in Ellijay. The name is Kells Creek Land Company (www.kellscreek.com) We LOVED it--it didn't have the scenic views that some of the cabins offer, but the sound of the creek is so relaxing, and we enjoyed walking along the road. I think it was $130/nite, plus she offers a 10% discount for teachers. The owner, Cooper Holland, was excellent to work with--she answers her cell phone or calls back right away if you have any questions, PLUS she got me my pet deposit back within a week. They have two cabins--we stayed in Mt. Laurel, but the Dragonfly was just as nice and maybe a bit more spacious.
If you or one of your friends decide to go there, just tell her we referred you--maybe we'll get a discount next time!!

Wild Dunes would be nice near Charleston--beach and the city. Litchfield Plantation was a great idea. If you think more about Asheville there is the Richmond Hill Inn.
Close to Atlanta would be Callaway Gardens.

If you are still thinking about Amelia, the Ritz is nice, but I like a place in Fernandina Beach, called Elizabeth Pointe, which seems a much better value, but still luxurious. They have a web site. You can sit on the wraparound porch and read and watch the ocean all day, or take in the historic sites, or shop in the historic district, or drive to St. Mary's and take the ferry for 1/2 day to Cumberland Island. Amelia is within the 6 hour drive distance from Atlanta.
