Sounds like Monterey County is the perfect fit! Monterey is only 2-2.5 hours from SFO and has everything you mentioned. You could stay in one of the smaller towns like Pacific Grove or Carmel-by-the-Sea and venture over to Monterey at your leisure. You can even rent bikes on Cannery Row and ride along the coastal recreation trail.
Also check out the Carmel Mission or one of the many adobes in downtown Monterey. http://www.seemonterey.com/tourist-a...literary-sites I work for the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau so my job is to make sure you have a great time! |
>>just go somewhere for the day on Sunday<
SF A local product, Tom Brady from San Mateo, is on after the Niners game. Then another Bay Area guy, Aaron Rodgers from Cal, is on Sunday. No time to "just go somewhere" this weekend. Stu Dudley |

Looks like you didn't read the whole thread . . . sf7307: You can't imagine how many things I've turned down/opted out of/lied to get out of tomorrow :) (Even if the game wasn't a 'must' -- my license plate is Go9ers and I can't be seen driving around during a game :D ) |
LOL. You guys are 30 some year Bay Area residents and it's been 31 years since we moved to SD. Hey - when I/we lived in the city - sometimes just getting over to Sausalito or Mill Valley - Mt. Tam, etc was a good "day trip" (with or without the "tripping" part :) ). Even reliving my "commute" on the ferry from my Sausalito days to the Ferry Bld and back was a fun thing to do. Or having drinks at the old Trident - now Ondine is it - looking back at the city.
Or grabbing a proscuitto sandwich down at Luccas was it? - on Chestnut - and going to the Marina Green to just enjoy looking across the bay. Loved all those "getaways" while living in SF - but now as a football fan - there isn't a better TV weekend than this one is there? So guess where I will be vegging most of the day. |
BTW Stu. The Lake Shasta area is beautiful and if you are into fishing - fish or bait - many beautiful options in NO Cal. You may know the prized New Zealand trout fishing started over 100 years ago with stock taken from the McLoud river was it - northeast of Redding.
And there are times when the Trinity Alps - with snowfall - can look much like their bigger cousins in Europe. |
Er - that should read - fly or bait fishing. Anyhow - you get my "drift". :)

Trident was down below, and Ondine (different restaurant - owned by the Kingstn trio) was up above. We dined and/or had drinks at the Trident many times. I still have a menu from there. Both are long gone, however. >Or grabbing a proscuitto sandwich down at Luccas was it? - on Chestnut< I think it is still there - at lest there is an "old fashoned" Italian deli still on Chestnut - think it is Luca's. Trident - famous for their scantily clad waitresses.

Tom, we still make it a day (now I refuse to say "trip") out of Mill Valley or Saratoga, etc -- anywhere we we can see some nice scenery, shop in some nice boutiques and have a pleasant drink or bite to eat!
Alas, not today - our day "trip" has morphed into going to some friends in the East Bay (no Raiders fans in this group, but one Saints fan - should be interesting :-) |
Ain't you glad you didn't miss the Niners game !!!
Stu Dudley |
What a game!
|
After the Saints last TD and kickoff I had to mute the sound and then just peek after I figured each 9er play was over. The if the crowd was screaming -- on w/ the sound and watch the replay :)
Can you tell I get incredibly nervous :D |
As my DS said in a text, Oh. My. God. Awesome!!! Super Bowl at my house!!!

I did almost the same thing when Brian Wilson was closing out the ninth for the Giants World Series clincher. I had the DVR on pause, however. All of a sudden our entire neighborhood erupted in wild cheers & screaming. I figured out that Giants had won, so I was less nervous when I finally watched him put 2 on than strike out the side (I think). Stu Dudley |
What an exciting game.
And Stu: When I lived in Sausalito ('72) - I was having a libation out on the deck of the trident - just standing there enjoying the view and a guy sails up and tosses me the rope to his 30 or so footer and heads inside. He must have thought I was the attendant - and he didn't say a word. I did nicely tie it up for him - but thought about taking it for a little zip around the bay. :) Wouldn't he have been surprised to come out to no boat? |
Oh yes: I even took out one of those scantily clad waitresses at the Trident - a couple of times. Nice gal. :)
|
And BTW - when I moved to SF in '70 - I rooted for both the Raiders (had an old teammate/friend who played for them) and the Niners (who weren't much good after Brody retired) - and long time locals used to give me a bad time about rooting for both teams.
