Need hotel in NJ, commuting to NYC

I am planning a weekend trip to NYC and find prices rather high in Manhattan. Having family in South Jersey they suggest to stay in Jersey and commute to the city. Where in Jersey, Hoboken?????? And are there hotels there? Help!

Lori,
On our week-end trips to NYC, we often stay in a motel/hotel in the Secaucus/Meadowlands/Carlstadt area in New Jersey and drive into the city. I can personally recommend the following: Hampton Inn Meadowlands in Carlstadt (our recent favorite), Meadowlands Hilton, Embassy Suites in Secaucus, and the Fairfield Inn in East Rutherford.

I agree with the previous post. There is also Teaneck, NJ. An expensive hotel The Glenpointe. You may also want to try Ft. Lee, NJ.

One advantage of staying in Hoboken or Jersey City would be that you don't to worry about driving in (and parking!) in NYC, you could just take the PATH train into Manhattan for a dollar.

Stayed at a Ramada in Weehawken, NJ, took the ferry from their dock to NYC, then a bus up to the Theatre District. Very easy, the hotel was nice, continental b'fast included, pool, etc. Highly recommend staying on the other side of the river and ferrying over. (Plus, our kids liked the ferry ride).

I agree with the Weehawken suggestion. If $$ is a big issue you might try the Meadowlands Plaza which is in Seacaucus. I believe they're about $70-$80 per night and a bus to NYC goes by the door. The only options in Jersey City that are convenient are Tunnel Motor Lodge by Holland Tunnel entrance -cheap and reasonably clean but small, dark and depressing rooms - not recommended... or the Doubletree. It's walking distance to the PATH train but is likely to be just as expensive (or more so) than many NYC hotels. There will be a Marriot Courtyard opening about 100 yards from the PATH station but it doesn't appear that it wil be ready until mid-late summer - might still be worth checking on.

Hi Caitland,
Thanks for replying. Do you have any hotel names in Hoboken? I heard that this would be the nicest place to stay if commuting to the city.
Thanks again,
Lori

I've driven though Hoboken on a number of occasions and don't recall seeing any hotels - I think most of the hotels in that general area are in Weehawken (which is immediately adjacent to Hoboken - these are both geographically fairly small towns). A quick web search only revealed the Hotel Edwards and I know nothing about it. Perhaps they have a Chamber of Commerce to call?

I live in Hoboken, and know of only one hotel there: the Hotel Edwards which is right beside the PATH. I've never set foot in it, can't testify to service, cleanliness etc. but that is the only one in town. The PATH station is literally 20 seconds from the hotel, and it's also close to the many restaurants and bars in that area. Saying that though, on weekends it can get quite noisy.

Good luck with your search. Hoboken is definitely the best town to stay in if you ask me. But then again I'm slightly biased.

How much are you planning to spend for your hotel? It's very possible that you could get a nice hotel in Manhattan through Priceline or Expedia's Hotel Price Matcher for a weekend stay for the same or even less (weekend stays are typically under $100/night for 3 star hotels) than you are planning to spend in No. Jersey. I host a forum to discuss bidding, so if you'd like, you can read about accepted bids before making your decision.

http://pub4.ezboard.com/bpricelinean...iabidding.html

If the Ramada in Weehawken is reasonably priced, forget the rest and do that. It's right there on the dock to the ferry and is very nice. Otherwise the Glenpointe is Teaneck is way out of the budget and is also not convenient to public transport. The Secaucus/Meadlowlands hotels cater to Newark airport and are a good idea. Jersey City/Hoboken is convenient to get public transport but not convenient to get a good inexpensive hotel. Not mentioned yet is there are 2 hotels quite close to the Lincoln Tunnel that perhaps are in North Bergen, maybe Harmon Meadows, or it may still be called Secaucus. (but they're closer to the city than the other ones close to the Meadowlands) There is a M Motel (I think that's what it's called, there is also one of these in the sity at like 38th between 7th and 8th?? or there abouts) and also a Red Roof at the same location. Red Roof has a big billboard up at $79.99 a nite. I've never stayed there, but most RR's are not fancy but clean enough. If you're really trying to save some money they may be a good choice. If the Ramada doesn't work out, and the Red Roof is too low end, then I agree with the suggestion of the Fiarfield in Carlstadt. (basically at the Meadowlands)
