need hotel help for san diego

We will be flying in and staying overnight in San Diego before boarding a cruise ship the next day.

Can anyone suggest a convenient hotel or motel? I had heard some negative things about the Holiday Inn near the harbor. The Hampton Inn that someone recommended is not available for that night.

Are there places that would give us transportation to the cruise ship?
Or pick us up at the airport?

Thanks in advance.

The Holiday Inn at the Embarcadero is by far the closest hotel. What negatrive things did you hear?

The Westin on Broadway is not too far:

The Manchester Hyatt is close and there are a few Marriott properties not too far away including this one:

The Sheraton on Harbor Island is also close.

Really, any downtown hotel is just a few minutes from the cruise terminal.

I'd stay at the Embassey Suites downtown. You might get some Hilton deals as well (Embassey is part of HIlton) by looking at the San Diego Convention Center site.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Unfortunately, many of the places - including Embassy Suites - have no availability for that night. That was also true of Courtyard by Marriott and some others.

The hotels, which looked very nice, are running about $300 per night. I should have said that we preferred to stay under $200 if possible.

The Holiday Inn Bayside gets terrible reviews on Trip Advisor.

This is very discouraging.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Try finding a hotel in Point Loma or Shelter Island. You will be very close to the airport and 10 mins to the pier by taxi. We've stayed at the Best Western Island Palms and the Bay Club on Shelter Island (both were nice enough, and there is dining nearby - there are 2 or 3 other hotels there as well) and the Best Western Posada in Point Loma (clean, but just OK, and not in a really walkable area). There is also a newer Homewood Suites in Point Loma as well as a few other chains like Comfort Inn, etc but we have not stayed there. Many of the Shelter Island hotels have airport shuttles.

Did you check the Hilton Harbor Island also?

Holiday Inn Bayside is not across the road from the cruise terminal. That is Holiday Inn on the Bay. They are different places.

I toured most of the hotels listed above in 2003 looking for a 2004 four day ships reunion site.

I decided on the Holiday Inn Bayside and was extremely satisfied.
We were treated royally, the rooms were great, and our banquet, a luau was delicious. Everything they promised happened as they go out of their way for military reunion groups.

Of the six reunions that I planned, the Holiday Inn Bayside was without a doubt, the best hotel we stayed in.

Yes, they have an airport shuttle, and the hotel was being renovated during my 2003 visit.

I can't thank you all enough.
This is a great Board!
You have solved my problem.

I was looking at the wrong Holiday Inn (which sounds like it would have been fine) - and didn't realize that the one On the Bay was the one we really wanted, right across from the cruise ship.

It has availability, the price is okay, and it has an airport shuttle.

You are all very kind.
You have inspired me to check our Board (Penna., Philly) and try to be helpful.

Excellent Sylvia!
Make sure you ask for a room with a bay view and high floor number..so you get a great view.
Anthony's Fish grotto is across the street..lots of fried fish items but they do have an excellent Manhattan chowder and a avocado shrimp salad..eat in the bar or dining room..also, oyster bar at the Fish Market is really good with chowder, steamers, sushi and other yummy fresh fish items..don't eat in the dining room!
