Need help with vaction plan to the outer banks

We are planning on going to the outer banks in August. We have a 3 year old and a baby. We plan on taking two weeks of vacation and we will be driving from Maryland. Which islands have family friendly things to do? We have heard Duck and Nags Head were good places. What is there to do on those two islands? My son is also into pirates right now. Are there any islands that have any pirate attractions? Thanks for the help.

We're going to OBX for the first time this year mid-June so while I've done a lot of research I don't have any first hand experience to share. My only advice would be that if you are planning on going this summer you really need to hurry up and find a place to stay. I rented a house several months ago and I know it has been booked for the entire summer for quite a while now.

I prefer Duck and Corolla. If you can wait until September to go the rates will be substantially lower.

Because the public schools open in late August, you may be able to get a lower rate in late August. Carolina rates drop drastically in September and October as well. I prefer October as it is warm enough to swim and enjoy the sun but not stifling like a Carolina summer can be.

As Blackbeard plied the sounds and saltwater rivers of North Carolina in the early 1700s, the Blackbeard motife is popular at the beach resorts.

I honestly wish you would take the time to go to www.obxconnection.com and ask this same question THERE...it is worth the time to register..please do this as you will get MUCH more UP TO DATE information from people who vacation there all the time and also people who live there.

Search this board, there are several lenghty posts about OBX.

I'd go with Nags Head if you need activities for the child. Duck is great for relaxing. It does have some stores, but the Nags Head area is more commercial with mini-golf, groceries, etc. and is closer to the aquarium in Manteo.

If you have 2 consecutive weeks of vacation you have many options. There are many great towns from Corolla to Nags Head. Try and find the best deal on a vacation home and spend the rest enjoying the Outer Banks. If you have to choose 1 town stay from Nags Head to Kitty Hawk it will provide you with the most access to local attractions and things to do. Enjoy the beach.
