cak01, we were in Maui a couple of weeks ago and stayed in Wailea. It was our first visit and we had a great time. We tried to see everything and didn't plan much time to just hang out at the pool at our resort so I recommend finding some down time.

We took our time driving the Road to Hana and we were gone around 10-11 hours. We borrowed the audio tape from our hotel (Fairmont) and they also gave us a few page document that was good at highlighted all the sights. We also borrowed a cooler and towels. We had lunch at Hana Hotel Maui which was very nice. We drove all the way around which we were told saves you a little bit of time and we did not think the roads were too bad.

We did a snorkel trip with Trilogy Excursions - we went to Molokini and Turtle Town. I would highly recommend them. We had a great crew and they gave you a nice barbecue chicken lunch.

One day it was a little rainy so we went to the Maui Ocean Center and it was very nice. We have a great aquarium here in Chicago so probably would have passed if the sun was shining. We also stopped in Lahaina and shopped a little and then continued driving a little past Kapalua. The roads become one lane and it is pretty rough. We actually turned around once we had a chance because it was pretty stressful but it was very beautiful.

We loved Mama's Fish House - our best meal there. I had the mahi mahi stuffed with crab and lobster. We also enjoyed Nick's Fish Market which was at our hotel.

Have a great trip!

I think you'll have better luck with groceries at a grocery store, like the Safeway. It's just a plain old WalMart, not one of those Monster WalMarts like I have seen in the southeast.

We saw a hawaiin themed show in Maui called "Ulalena" that was just Fabulous. really, do not miss it. We also went to the old lahaina Luau, & I didn't care much for the food, but the dancing was utterly fantastic, and the drinks were free. Also we enjoyed a sea kayaking/snorkeling trip to the "fishbowl",and the "Aquarium" that began in La Perouse bay which was another highlight of our trip. I believe that Pacific whale foundation provided our escort/guide named Deja Brown, who was just wonderful. She also provided a very delightful picnic lunch. It was a ton a fun. We spent another day horseback riding down into the volcano, Haleakela. Our guide was Mickey, a portugese hawaiin, who reminded me of Jack Palance, and it was a fun,fun day, but my daughter and I, who can ride a horse, were sore the following day from the extended time in the saddle.(about 8 hours) It was very memorable. Try to get the book, Maui Revealed. It is an excellent reference, especially for the road to Hana, where the real adventure is knowing where to stop and hike. There was almost no food vendors on the road to Hana. Best to purchase a picnic lunch, or make your own, before going. Sorry this is so long. But that was only about half of what we did in Maui. Have a great time! Also, forget Walmart. Any grocery store will do, and will be reasonable. We loved Bubba Gumps in Lahaina for food. I know it's a chain but the food was very good. Aloha!

The Costco is right near the Walmart. It's a good place to pick up food, wine and souveniers (cookies/candy, etc.)

If you want a casual dinner when you arrive, head over to Paia Fish Market.
The Ono Burgers are delicious!

How close is Mama's Fish House and Paia Fish Market to the Kihei/Wailea area? What other activities may be close to these restaurants? I'm planning on lunch at Mama's.

Pa`ia Fish Market is in Pa`ia, Mama's is in Kuau, just beyond Pa`ia. Both are on the north shore. Allow yourself 40 minutes from Wailea to Pa`ia. The last few days it has been taking me much longer, due to a combination of spring break, rain and windsurf competition at Ho`okipa.

Pa`ia has lots of shops and a great surfing beach. It is also convenient to upcountry, hiking locations, Haleakala Hwy.

Is Safeway close to Hali Hui Kai? Where is the best place to get beer & liquor? Is the Pa'ia Fish House on the way (or somewhat close) from the airport to Hail Hui Kai? Do they have non-fish items on menu?

The Kihei Safeway is on your way to your condo and just a few miles away. The best place for liquor is always Long's Drugs. Best prices and a good selection. Safeway is always a few bucks more. I rarely see any really great deals at Costco, and I think their beer and soda prices are high. Costco does wine better than their beer, price-wise, but for me the affort it takes to get to Coscto, and then get in and out negates any perceived value.

Pa`ia Fish Market is not on the way from the airport and will require a side trip of only a few miles, but in reality it won't be a quick, easy trip. Traffic into and in Pa`ia in the afternoon is messy and parking is a huge issue. You'll probably end parking in a public lot, in a beach town, where I wouldn't feel safe leaving my valuables. I love Pa`ia, but maybe you should save the Fish Market for a day when you are kicking around on the north shore and don't have a car load of personal items and won't be tired and easily frustrated by the slow flow of traffic and the parking issue.

They have vegetarian items I know for sure. They have the best salad value on the island--a huge wonderful plate of local mixed greens, Kula tomatoes, carrots and sprouts for $5.95, and I am sure they have chicken, probably a burger, but I can't say for sure. I've never been woith anyone who has not ordered fish there and since I am a pescitarian (eat fish, but no other meat), I can't say I've ever noticed the meat items on the menu.

So, Here Today Gone to Maui - You have been so helpful. Can you recommend a moderately priced restaurant to go to when we arrive on Tuesday (maybe on the way to Hali Hu Kai or close by)?
