MArilyn is one of the regulars on the California boards, and came out to NY 2 weeks ago, so we got to meet each other.

Also can't figure out if I need a car in LA or just better off waiting until I get to SD to rent one.

LA is a driving town. Can't keep track of your itinerary & don't know what you plan for LA but local public transport is not great. I did see the train that runs from LA to SD & it looked nice & new.

I've lived in San Diego for 10 years--you definitely need a car in SoCal but don't drive to or from Vegas--it can be bumper to bumper traffic all the way throught the desert!
