Need help with BI and Kaui lodging (family)

I am resurrecting our travel plans for our first trip to Hawaii at the end of June. I've been in the planning stages twice over the past 4 years but it didn't happen. We have two kids ages 10 and 16 and have decided we want to see the big island and Kaui. We have 12-14 days so I'm hoping it will be enough. We don't like Disney type resorts but we do like more on the upscale side, but the more authentic the better. I think Grand Hyatt in Kaui will be good for us but still trying to figure lodging on the BI and possibly a night at VNP. Hotel suggestions? Anyone have good VRBO or Home Away options? A cool house/condo on the BI would be fun. We definitely would like easy access to beach swimming if possible. Also wondering if we should plan an overnight at VNP or just make it a day trip?
Thanks for your suggestions, love this board.

We stayed at Fairway Villas at Waikola on the Kohala Coast 2 years ago are are going back this year. They are nice condo's for a good price and good location for us. Check them out.

Your choice of the Hyatt on Kauai is an excellent choice. The best beach for the kids will be Poipu beach about a mile away.

If you check there was another recent post asking something of the same questions. Look under Hawaii.

As for getting to the Volcano - I think it's worth a night there -but you could drive it from Kona - a very beautiful two hour drive, and suggest you leave early.

Or - it's about 20 minutes from the Hilo Airport.

And if you stay at Poipu - please drive up to see the beautiful North Shore - Bali Hai.

We just stayed in Makanui 311, rented from Parrish Collection. It is a five minute walk from the Hyatt. 3 bedrooms, lots of room, no ocean view but we thought an excellent value. Short walk to Brenneckes Beach too.
