Need help w/Big Sur accomodations

Any recent reviews of Deetjen's?
Or, of Big Sur Lodge or Lucia Lodge?

See some reviews here, but they're getting fairly old. Have heard some renovations were happening at Big Sur Lodge & at Lucia Lodge, so was wondering if anybody had stayed there recently? Whatever the case, how would you rank these against each other?

The Post Ranch & Ventana are out for us, so was hoping one of these might work out okay, for a little rest & relaxation. Would like to be near hiking too... thanks!

I have stayed in all 3 places. I was last at Lucia in 2001. It was pretty much a total dump then (and we had the best room...the one on the end near the cliff). Views outside are great but they would have to remodel it 100% for it to be more than a dump inside. Deetjens is also "funky" but the dinning room has good food and it has atmosphere. However, it is on the other side of highway 1 so forget views and you do get noise. Big Sur Lodge is quieter, and in the woods. Closer to Carmel. No ocean view.

We stayed at Big Sur Lodge 2 years ago, they were just renovating. We had one of the newly renovated rooms and it was lovely. As I recall we had a king bed, sitting area and separate bedroom with twin beds, small balcony. Nice pool area and plenty of hiking right there at the park. Restaurant was fine - no Ventana - but certainly good food and pleasant atmosphere. I would highly recommend the Big Sur Lodge.

Thanks so much for those replies!
A *huge* help, I might add.

We stayed at Big Sur Lodge way back in '88, as college students. Thought it pretty decent back then...even the restaurant. But, wasn't sure since so many years have passed, which of these three would 'win' out against the other. Never been to Deetjen's or Lucia Lodge. Deetjen's has always looked intriguing from the road, however.

Don't think I've ever noticed Lucia Lodge...altho' again, it's been years since we drove Big Sur.

Thank you so much, again for your reviews! I've got a major health issue that's come up this Fall, & we could really use a little getaway/escape to Big Sur...

I just came back from driving aroudn there. AS you may know, Lucia is 25 miles or so south of big sur in the middle of nowhere (but beautiful nowhere). Also, Lucia lodge has no TV or phone, if that matters. But it is spectacular. If you want to be in a place and just hang out, read, andlook at the ocean, it woud be nice. Big usr lodge and deetjens are in big sur proper, adn are closer to other things.
I have heard there are great trails around big sur.

Another somewhat more exotic option would be to stay at esalen [which is between big sur adn lucia]

Having lived in the Big Sur area for 6 years, I would like to know what the above person means by "Big Sur proper" as there is no town or semblence of a town. There is just the post office and 50+ miles of very scattered visible buildings. And yes, all approx. 50 miles from Carmel to San Simeon are called "Big Sur".

Tried to post a reply yesterday, but it wouldn't 'take'.

Anyway, thanks for the info on the phones! Since even cells don't work that great there, it's good to know, due to health considerations. Altho' I know there would be pay phones around.

Will look into Esalen, too.

Btw, to the Big Sur resident...
am I correct in assuming cells don't work too well there? Thanks again to all!

Indeed, if I would say with a high degree of certainty that your cell phone won't work in most if not all (and I'd say 95% sure all) of the Big Sur area. Do you know that one can't even get radio reception in your car when you travel through there nor any TV signal except if you have a satilite
dish? The reason is the mountain range ends right at highway 1 and highway 1 is almost right on the edge of the cliffs at the ocean. That's why Big Sur is closed off by slide that destroy sections of the only road which occurs usually several times a year. Most of the time they can get the road openned again in hours to days but there have been 3 times that I know of in the last 15 years that that only roads was closed off for MONTHS with many slides all over those 50 miles (from Ragged Point to the coast guard lighthouse is the area this can happen in).
