Need help planning summer family trip to Colorado
We are family of four - kids are 11yo...have about 10 days - need help planning itinerary. I think we have to fly in/out of Denver - kids want to see Rockies baseball game...other than that - no plans - we want to do sightseeing, rafting, some hiking but not much, ride trains = I would love to get to Durango/Mesa Verde but I'm worried that we will be driving all the time.
Can someone help me plan the 10 day???? |
Gotta scoot for Cinquo de Mayo (sp.) - - but consider a circular route. Head to the Summit (Frisco is cute as is Breckinridge) - and/or Aspen/Vail- and then down toward Telluride/Durango - and come back thru Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, etc.
Or go north through Boulder and Estes Park, etc. |
If you do the Durango train and your budget can with stand it. The zipline/train combo is the way to go. Best zipline in the world, IMOP. www.soaringcolorado.com yep-very expensive.
Great Sand Dunes is another good option. Go the last week of May or first week of June for Medano Creek flowing good. There is really not much to eat here, so I would bring all picnic supplies for a meal or two. Rocky Mountain National Park is fantastic. The Loch/Sky Pond is a good hike. I like to have a meal in Stanley Hotel. Perhaps do an Alpine Slide along the way. There are several in Colorado. I'm not totally sure, but I think the one in Winter Park is probably the best/longest one. |
What month are you going?
|
We are going in August - probably the middle of the month.

I would save the dunes for another time then. Creek will be dry by then, and to me the creek just adds an extra dimension to the already really cool dunes.
RMNP would be a cooler(weather), so I would for sure spend a day or two there. |
