Need help planning "Fall Leaf Color Change" trip

We recently visited the Asheville area and want to go back to see the beautiful color of the changing leaves, I could really use some help with were to go from Asheville and WHEN to go.
While in the area 2 weeks ago we did visit the Biltmore Estate, Chimney Rock, and DuPont National Forest (thanks to all who suggested those) so we have those already covered. We don't mind driving 1+ hours from Asheville to go on a drive to see the leaves or anywhere you may suggest. I did get a suggestion to see Clingmans Dome, how is the distance on that from Asheville?
Any suggestion you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!

the prevailing wisdom is that the mid part of October is prime leaf season. Make reservations.
Exactly "where" to just see leaves, could be problematic.
You could just head north on up the Parkway to Virginia for color.

Clingman's Dome is in the Smokeys--it would be better to stay over that way.
You could drive up or down the Blue Ridge Parkway. You could go to Lake Lure.
Go down to Brevard, driving through the Cradle of Forestry/Pisgah from the BRP to get to it. there are falls and sliding Rock in that area.
go to Boone and Blowing Rock and Benner Elk.

I would definitely take a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway, as Theresa suggests. My husband and I were married last October in the town of Blowing Rock on October 19th...the leaves were perfect! Exactly what I wanted. When speaking with my wedding planner I asked her which weekend would be the best for peak Fall colors and she said the 3rd or 4th weekend of October. Just an FYI- it can get very cold in October in Western NC. The week after our wedding, it snowed.
